12/21 Winter starts today. It's the winter Solstice, the shortest day and longest night of the year. From here on it gets better, each day gets a little longer.  Winter is starting off a doozie too. There's snow on the ground here in Seattle, it'll be a white Christmas. It's the season for skiiers, kids to play in the snow, and Subaru owners because they can get around fine (no chains). The snow does help sales too because people realize they need a Subaru. And on the subject of a white Christmas, I always watch Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and Rosemary Clooney (George's aunt) in White Christmas. Ok so it's a sappy happy movie but that's a great song .. 'I'm dreaming of a white Christmas... '
On the winter solstice, the South Pole has 24hrs of daylight and there is no daylight at the North Pole.

Driving tips for a cold weather have you checked your radiator and washer fluids recently?
Keep at least 1/3 - 1/2 tank of gas to minimize condensation.
Before starting the car turn OFF all accessores - it's much better for the battery.
Let the engine run for a minute or two before taking off.
If you have the All Weather Package (heated outside mirrors, front wiper de-icer and heated seats) turn on the front wiper deicers to free the blades if there's any frost or ice. Don't use warm water on the windshield, it can crack the glass. And of course use the heated seats and rear defroster.
Door lock frozen? Lock deicer is handy and good to use (at most auto parts or hardware stores, or locksmith), or heat the key with a match.
Door frozen closed? Help prevent this - lightly wipe silicone on the rubber seals. Use silicone spray on the rubber door seal. Be sure to wipe off excess and overspray.
good things to carry in the car cell phone, flashlight that works, ice scraper, emergency reflective triangle or flare, blanket, gloves, bag of sand, shovel, common sense.

Snow driving: see above, and then check to see your are tires ok, do they have lots of tread and are they properly inflated?
Can you see out? Gently scrape snow off, don't scrape down to the paint, it can scratch it. Maybe let the car warm up and melt it off.
Keep at least 1/3-1/2 tank of gas to minimize condensation and also to keep warm if you get stuck.
Take off slowly, no jack-rabbit starts
Braking: only very gently tap the brakes to slow down. Anticipate stops, lift off the gas pedal. Downshift if you can with the Sportshift automatic or manual transmission.
Avoid hard braking. If you have to brake hard, don't pump, just push down and hold so the anti-lock brakes kick in. Then remember to steer and not to panic.
Avoid accelerating while turning.
Watch for snow build-up behind the tires
Watch out for the 'other guy' esp the one who thinks he's invincible and laws of physics don't count in his 4x4.

12/11 Subaru expands quickly in China  'Subaru is enjoying the fastest sales growth among imported auto brands in China...  sales surge in China from 10,000 in 2007 to around 20,000 in 2008. China has become Subaru's fourth biggest target market following US, Japan and Canada. The company is expected to open 102 outlets in China by the end of the year, which will be increased to 128 in the following year.'  Sounds like China will soon pass Canada the article.

11/28 GPS units track and record your location. GPS is good for directions so I don't get lost but they also track my location and while I certainly have nothing to hide, does my car need to keep a record of where I've been?
'The (GPS) units can place a suspect at a crime scene, undermine an alibi or prove fault in an accident..  And though privacy rights advocates don't like the intrusion, courts tend to side with authorities. Global positioning systems (GPS) and factory-installed "black box" event data recorders effectively keep late-model vehicles under 24/7 surveillance, providing evidence that can place a suspect at a crime scene, undermine an alibi, expose a cheating spouse or prove liability in an accident...   black boxes installed in new cars have the potential to provide insurance companies with accident information useful in defending or prosecuting claims, and many insurance policies now contain fine print obliging drivers to turn over the event data recorders in liability investigations.
"That's my problem with this, from the privacy perspective," John Soma, a Denver University law professor and executive director of its Privacy Foundation, said of event data recorders and of authorities reviewing the stored information. "The car comes equipped with it. They can't disable it. There hasn't been any meaningful legislative discussion of this or any meaningful notice that this is now in your car." the full article

10/25 What the candidates drive. Not a Subaru in the bunch.
Obama until recently drove a fast V-8 Hemi Chrysler 300C. He now drives a Ford Escape hybrid, also the car of choice for John Edwards, Al Gore and Hillary Rodham Clinton.
McCain said his first car was a 1958 Corvette. Now he drives a Cadillac CTS sedan.
VP candidate Biden, told AP at the start of the 2008 campaign last year that he drives a 1967 Corvette that his father gave him as a wedding gift when he married his first wife.
VP candidate Palin drives a diesel VW Jetta. For state business, she drives a Chevrolet Suburban.
10/18 What color do you like? Silver is top choice. According to PPG paint company  'silver has once again dominated as the world’s most popular car color but other shades are gaining ground, especially in North America.
In North America, color rank is silver 20%, white 18%, black 17% + 2% from last year, reds 13%, blues 12%, naturals 9%, other 7%, and green 4%.
'Blue will be the new major color area for the coming years' said Reiner Mueller-Koerber, PPG's Europe color styling mgr.
Subaru buyers generally prefer lighter colors. Subaru offers 2 surprisingly similar silvers Steel Silver and Spark Silver, also Newport Blue, Sage Green, and Seacrest Green. These have been the popular choices the past few years. Earthtones like Deep Bronze, Harvest Gold, Topaz Gold and Sunlight Gold Opal are making a comebaCK

10/1  It was 100 Years Ago today that the Model T went on sale.  10/1/1908 and everything changed.  Are we there again at the start of a new car era? The original Model T had 4 cylinders, 20 horsepower, a hand crank starter, top speed was 45mph and it got up to 21mpg. It had a canvas top, no side windows, no heater, no gas guage, and no shock absorbers except for padded seats. In 1908 it cost $850 and dropped to less than $300 by 1923 when production stopped and 15 million had been built. It was finally outsold by the VW Beetle.
Is it 1908 again with everything about to change, is the Insight and Prius today's Model T? Expect the hybrid selection to grow dramatically, fuel cell cars are in trial stages, electric charging and hydrogen fueling stations are being planned...
9/22 Fall starts end of summer :(
9/15 Destination increase, all models. Destination on cars arriving at dealers starting late September 2008 will be $695 (up $30, from $665). Alaska $845 (from $815). Cars already at dealers prior to the increase will still have $665 destination.
9/2  Subaru of America is good employer. Back in May, 2009, SoA was ranked #2 on the Best Adoption Friendly Workplaces in America list released tby the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption.
Today, September 2, SoA announced that it has also earned the top rating of 100% for their treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender employees and consumers in the 2009 Corporate Equality Index (CEI) annual survey administered by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation. Subaru joins the ranks of 259 other major U.S. businesses which get top marks for their treatment of LGBT employees and consumers.
"We are very proud to accept this recognition. Due to the diverse insights, talents and perspectives our employees contribute, we have built a culture that is cohesive in operation, strong at heart and a company where our employees work with pride," said Tomohiko Ikeda, chairman, president and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. "Together we hope to create a reputation of distinction, service and respect."
The CEI rated 583 businesses evaluating non-discrimination policies, health and domestic partner benefits. Subaru's efforts in ensuring LGBT equality in each of the survey's main criterion earned it the prestigious 100% ranking.
8/28 Subaru cleans up their painting process.  SIA (Subaru of Indiana Automotive) has converted from a solvent borne to a water borne paint process for Subaru production in its Lafayette facility. The company completed the switch in less than a month, during the plant's annual summer shutdown in July. The company says the new paint process reduces hazardous materials handling, improves future capacity and creates long-term cost savings. SIA chose to switch to a water-borne paint process include the positive environmental impact and reduced hazardous materials handling.
8/15 How many cars did the average new car dealer sell July, 08? The average Subaru dealer sold 27 cars in July 2008. What's important is really the number of dealers a manufacturer has. For example, there are only 82 Mini dealers in the US so those dealers dowe well.  For comparison, there are almost 600 Subaru dealers and Toyota has almost 1,450 dealers. Here's the top half of the 'sales per dealership' list for July: Toyota 143, Honda 123, Lexus 100, Nissan 81, BMW 71, Mini 62, Mercedes 60, Infiniti 51, Acura 48, Kia 43, Saturn 41, Ford 37, Chevy 34, VW 34, Mazda 33, Subaru 27, Audi 25, Dodge 19... all the way to Rolls Royce at 1 car per dealer in July.
8/12 Dog friendly vehicles 'Five and 25 - five (actually six with a tie) models with a base price of less than $25,000 and a fuel-economy rating of close to or exceeding 25 mpg on the highway. These models all have rear-hatch entries, fold-flat seats and relatively roomy cargo areas... The Forester has long been a favorite among dog lovers who want a surefooted ride but don't want a large SUV..' the article

7/29 Leases scare off banks. Many vehicles, especially those with marginal fuel economy like SUVs and trucks that were also popular lease vehicles, are no longer worth their anticipated residual value at lease end, and lenders are cutting back. When a car isn't worth the residual, the lender loses money. Last Friday, Chrysler said they'd stop all leasing later this year, now Ford and GMAC are cutting back. This also happened after the Ford Explorer roll-overs in 2000. No word from Subaru..
7/28 Immobilizer keys are now standard in all models. A code is needed to cut and program them. Dealer site for lost codes https://subarudealers.locksmithsdrm.com
7/22 Washington and California cell phone laws started July 1. In California talking on a cell phone while driving is a primary offense and more than 4,000 tickets have already been issued. The fine starts at $20 and increases with local fees.  Washington's ban is a secondary offense, State Patrol troopers stopped nearly 300 drivers, ticketing 113. An untold number of drivers ditched their phones as fast as possible when police vehicles approached... from the Seattle Times
7/21 Subaru co-founder Macolm Bricklin sues former partner, Chery.  Bricklinis suing China automaker Chery over a failed agreement to import the Chinese cars to the U.S.. Bricklin, who with Harvey Lamm brought Subaru cars to the US in the late 1960s, has been involved with the Fiat X1-9 Bertone, Yugo, powered bicyles, and the Bricklin SV-1 which was ahead of it's time.  Bricklin's current company, Visionary Vehicles, intended to import Chery's, but Chery has since signed an agreement with Chrysler. GM had previously accused Chery of copying its Daewoo Matiz/Chevy Spark in a previous lawsuit. Bricklin, always with an eye toward the next thing in the world of cars, is now working on an electric car. More on Malcom Bricklin
7/1 Hands free cell phone now required in Washington State, California, effective July 1.
Washington State- it's a secondary offense, so you have to be pulled over for something else like speeding before a $124 ticket is issued.
California- the new law is a primary offense, meaning you can get pulled over if a police officer sees you talking on a cell phone. It also bans anyone under 18 from using a cellphone or other mobile device while behind the wheel.
This is in addition to laws in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Wa, DC.. Some states and cities have local cell or distracted driving laws. (Pretty soon they'll have to post warning signs at state and city borders.)
6/26 Hands free cell phone required in Washington State and California. Its a ticketable offense starting July 1.

5/31 Chimpanzees used in advertising are often abused. Subaru, Yahoo, Honda and other companies have agreed not to use them, which is good. From PETA. '.. trainers kick, punch, and beat chimpanzees in order to make them obey commands. Chimpanzees used for entertainment are usually only a few years old. By the time they reach age 8, they are too powerful to control and are often discarded at roadside zoos or sold to cheap traveling shows. World-renowned chimpanzee expert Dr. Jane Goodall supports efforts to end the use of great apes in the entertainment industry. In March, Goodall and a group of primatologists concluded in the journal Science that the derisive portrayal of chimpanzees and orangutans in ads is undermining efforts to save these endangered animals..' more from PETA
5/14  Nice reputation.  SoA is #2 adoption-friendly workplace, a very nice award. Subaru of America was ranked #2 on the Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces in America list released today by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. The list was made up of large, medium and small businesses with Subaru named #2 in the medium sized company category. 'This is a great honor for us to be recognized as one of the Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces in America,” said Tom Doll, exec VP/ CFO “We are proud of our reputation as a family-focused organization.” Rita Soronen, the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption’s executive director, said the list debuted in 2007 and includes the top 100 organizations that provide exceptional support to employees who adopt. “More than 50 organizations nationwide established or enhanced their adoption benefits for 2008. As a result, employers who made the list offered more robust adoption benefits packages this year to make it. Rankings for the Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces in America list are based on the amount of financial assistance and paid leave provided. The foundation compiled the results from survey data collected from 919 U.S. employers. Several survey partners helped extend the survey’s scope even further by asking their subscribers/members to participate: Employee Benefit News, a SourceMedia publication that is the leading source of information for benefits decision makers; the National Restaurant Association; and the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. In addition to ranking the top 100, the foundation also recognized the top 10 by size, the leaders of each industry, and companies who support the cause of adoption and adoptive families in other ways. Go to AdoptionFriendlyWorkplaces.org to view each of the lists.
5/11 Happy Mother's Day
5/6 Snow tires. Yes it's summer but never to early to talk about snow and a new tire design with hidden studs that you extend when needed. 'QTires has developed this patented all-weather tire technology'. The studs extend from the surface of the tire in snow and ice, they're anti-corrosive safety studs that deploy when you need them providing optimal control on icy roads, then retract when driving conditions are safer..' This could be just the thing for those of us in winter states who like traction and safety but not the constant, droning, miserable, road-eating, butt-rumbling, ball bearing feeling of studded tires. More to come...

Also Mike Smith, Dave Clark Five's lead singer/keyboardist just died, from pneumonia, at 64. He was to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Canadian musician Jeff Healey died March 2 after a long battle with cancer.
2/23   Democrats like Subarus and Volvos, Republicans like GMC Yukons. The political machines dissect everything.
'...  from Steve Schmidt, a Republican political operative who's worked for Bush, Schwarzenegger and now McCain. He was just talking as the (McCain straight-talk) bus cruised along the highway between stops not long ago when he said: During one conversation, he explained that in 2004, when he was working for Bush’s re-election, “we targeted voters not where they lived but how they lived their lives, in the same way that credit-card companies do... And so we know, for instance, that among independent voters there are life styles and behaviors that identify them as Republicans or Democrats. For example, the GMC Yukon is a Republican vehicle, and Volvos and Subarus are the most Democratic vehicles..' more

9/26 Tribeca goes to college  'I recently moved my son, Tonio, 18, to Roanoke College in Virginia in a 2008 Subaru Tribeca.. He was not willing to let go of his two huge guitar amps, but with the third-row seat folded into the floor we found room for them and for almost everything else. I give the Tribeca credit. Not only for its 37.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row stowed, but for the way it has recovered from its woeful last rendition. Gone is the underpowered 3-liter engine and the automatic transmission that shifted like a 16-year-old new to a clutch.  The new, larger engine, rated at 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque (up from 245 horses and 215 pound-feet), is responsive and permits confident passing on the highway. The transmission could use a sixth gear, but at least it shifts like a grown-up.
Unfortunately, also gone is the pug nose. I know the old Edsel-like grille was often mocked, but it gave the Tribeca a distinctive look. The toned-down design is similar to what Subaru did to the beloved Impreza WRX, which lost its endearing toadlike features as it became more mainstream. I don’t know what makes Subaru so insecure about its appearance, but I wish it would go to the prom as is. Now the Tribeca looks pretty much like every other crossover. Good luck finding it at the mall.
My biggest surprise was how well the Tribeca handled. I don’t feel comfortable pushing crossover utility vehicles, no matter how carlike. They tend to be big, and they feel big. I brake for sharp curves. So when I slowed for a curve on a country road, only to discover that it was an unmarked hairpin that I was still approaching too fast, I had no choice but to hang on and trust the Tribeca to get me through. Thankfully, electronic stability control is standard. It was trust well earned. The Tribeca leaned into the turn and got me to the other side without a slip. For the rest of the trip, I hit the curves a bit harder. The Tribeca, it turns out, was fun — for a big, tall wagon — to drive.
My biggest complaint was with the GPS. It routed me in so many nutty ways that we turned it off..
Some of the Tribeca’s competitors have more legroom and cargo room for about the same price, but with its new powertrain the Tribeca has become a worthy addition to the crossover market. I just wish Subaru had taken a cue from Barbra Streisand and resisted the nose job..' from the NYT

Subarus are most common in the Northeast, Northwest and along the Front Range of the Rockies. In college towns such as Boulder, Colo., and Eugene, Ore., every third car is a Subaru, it seems. 12/5 Outback review from a guy who owns one  '... After 16 months, I’ve discovered two truths about the Outback that I think sum up our experience so far:
1. I still love driving it. Even with the smaller 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and 170 hp, the Outback is fun to drive, with excellent steering, decent pickup and a very comfortable ride. As a jaded auto journalist who tests a new car every week, I still can’t think of another car we would’ve been happier with.
2. We need a bigger car. With a 9-month-old and a dog, the Outback fills up quickly on weekend trips to the ‘burbs to visit the in-laws/grandparents. Now, if we didn’t have the dog or the child, the Outback would be plenty big enough. But thinking that baby No. 2 won’t be too far down the road we either need to get a minivan, a larger crossover or a roof-mounted cargo carrier. I’m leaning toward the cargo carrier and its much smaller price tag. ..' the article
11/18 2009 Outback and Legacy Harmon Kardan stereo- the new for 09 HK stereo in the Outback and Legacy SE models and up, has automatic Speed-Sensitive Auto Volume Control (SSVC). This proprietary HK technology is more focused on low voice frequency and down as opposed to high frequency speed related noise like tire whine. The volume changes may be very subtle. There are no adjustments or settings that the user can control or set.
10/12 Legacy GT review  '..Subaru's most mainstream sedan, the Legacy, competes in the heart of the American automotive market.  To attract attention against the likes of Toyota's topselling Camry, Honda's Accord and Nissan's Altima -- not to overlook myriad American offerings such as Ford's Fusion and Chevrolet's Malibu -- a small company such as Subaru needs to offer something out of the ordinary. For the Legacy, that would be its standard all-wheel drive.
Like all Subarus, the Legacy features the all weather advantages of four-wheel traction. Folks who live in snow country love their Subarus -- just take a look at a ski resort parking lot. But all-wheel drive isn't necessarily just for foul weather. There also are inherent advantages in handling and grip on dry pavement, which plays nicely into the idea of a performance car. And given years-long successes in rally racing, performance is something Subaru knows a bit about.
With 243 eager horsepower, the GT has plenty of punch -- once the revs climb above 2,000 rpm. The power comes on progressively but there's a noticeable lag until the turbo spins up. Then acceleration is quite lively.
The GT is a sprightly handler through the curvy bits. It always feels firmly planted on the tarmac and body roll is minimal. Steering is sharp and communicative, with just the right amount of effort for maximum control.
With its long suspension travel, the GT delivers a supple, comfortable ride on most surfaces, more in the European mode than Japanese.
The Legacy boasts a handsome, modern cabin, nicely finished with high quality materials and very comfortable bucket seats up front. Rear room is a bit tight compared with its competitors, but perfectly adequate for two. Electroluminescent gauges are brightly lit and easily read; climate and audio controls are well-placed and intuitive.
With its attractive, sporty styling and perky performance, the Legacy GT presents an attractive alternative to more family oriented sedans. And its all-weather capability is a definite plus. Subarus have always been a little different, out of the mainstream. The Legacy GT is proof that different can be good. Very good.'  more

9/15 Destination increase, all models. Destination on cars arriving at dealers starting late September 2008 will be $695 (up $30, from $665). Alaska $845 (from $815). Cars already at dealers prior to the increase will still have $665 destination.
9/7 Outback review 'Enter the Outback. Raised wagon has sedan-like handling. While Subaru was going out on a limb by offering an Outback raised wagon when it was far cooler to have an SUV, they did prove variation can breed profits and the popularity of the SUV through the ’90s made anything remotely resembling something capable of going off-road, very marketable.
The Subaru Outback set success in motion for what is now the emerging favorite class -- the crossovers. There is a lot to like about the Subaru, most notably the all-wheel drive and tried-and-true 2.5-liter flat-4 engine. For great traction and an outstanding center of gravity, the flat-4 spreads out the weight of the block over a wider area to create a feeling of tremendous tire on pavement control..
Part of the reason for the crazy-loyal customers is Subaru's ability to keep you safe and sound. You'll find antilock brakes, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and anti-whiplash front head restraints as standard issue on all 2008 Subaru Outbacks. The Outback earned a perfect five-star rating in NHTSA crash tests.
Base priced at the low end, the Subaru Outback is just over $21,500; but higher-level models such as the XT Limited will push the price over $30,000... Overall, the Subaru is great for those who want sure-footed all-weather traction and some extra ride height clearance. Smallish interior will disappoint some taller consumers, but the turbo 2.5-liter engine will create fun for those that comfortably fit into the cabin...'  the full article

7/24 Brochure errors, 2009 Outback and Legacy.
The 2009 Outback brochure incorrectly indicates the 2.5i SE has a CD changer, the correct stereo is a single disc CD.
The 2009 Legacy brochure incorrectly indicates the Legacy 2.5i SE and 3.0R models have a CD changer (they don't). The correct stereo on these models is a single disc CD. The Legacy brochure also omits that the 09 2.5i Limited has a power passenger seat in addition to the power driver seat.
7/14 Price increase. Cars arriving starting August 2008 (late July?) will include a $25 price increase to the dealer invoice only. This will not effect MSRP or cars already on dealer lots. The price of gas is effecting everything, including shipping the car to the dealer and the cost to fill that new car's gas tank when it's sold...

4/28 Turbo maintenance- Subaru releases a clearly worded turbo maintenance schedule and driving tips: The following information updates factory recommendations for the care and maintenance of new Subaru turbocharged vehicles.
The turbocharger, commonly called a “turbo,” is operated by the energy contained in the exhaust gas. The exhaust gas spins a turbine inside the turbocharger at an extremely high speed (more than 100,000 rpm). That compresses the air/fuel mixture in the cylinders, which creates higher power output. Because of the turbine’s rotation speed and the high temperature of the exhaust gas driving the turbo, proper cooling is needed to maintain its durability. Engine oil plays a major role in lubricating and cooling the turbo, so following recommended oil change guidelines is important...   oil and oil filter change interval for turbo vehicles is every 3,750 miles or four months,' the full article

4/21 Turbo engine stop sale announcement 'We took this action as a “Customer First” preventive action as we had confirmed, in other markets, that there was a small possibility of an “Engine Knocking Noise” caused by a contamination in the area of the connecting rod big end journal at very low mileage/time in service.
The action was successful in preventing the potential of failures for our customers. Subaru has defined a (an oil) screening process that you must perform to all of the affected vehicles in your inventory before delivery to a customer or putting in demonstrator service. The screening process consists of several steps to inspect the condition of the engine oil to determine if the engine is not affected by the contamination, is already damaged, or has a potential for damage...' read more
4/17. Turbo engine stop sale (pls refer to 4/5/08 below). It's my understanding Subaru will be replacing a small number of turbo engines built after early January due to a manufacturing problem that left metal shavings in the engine that could cause early bearing failure.

4/12  Legacy 3.0R review:  'Sports-car-like paddle shifters, a six-cylinder engine and seats trimmed with perforated leather aren't typically expected in Subaru sedans. But they are standard equipment for the newest version of the Subaru Legacy 3.0R...  luxury and sportiness can combine comfortably in a Subaru car with an unassuming exterior... 4/7 End of the L.L.Bean name on Outbacks and Foresters. Subaru and LL Bean will not be renewing their partnership when the agreement ends June 30, 2008. That means no more new LL Bean named models, of course the cars will continue with new names. Just the name is changing!
2009 Forester LL Bean production ends the first week of April. Foresters produced after that will be the 2.5X Limited.
2008 Outback L.L.Bean models will complete the model year run, produced ending April, 2008.
2009 Outback LL Beans will be either the 2.5i Limited or 3.0R Limited, and the 09 2.5i Limited becomes the 2.5i Premium.
4/5  Turbo engine stop sale update 4/17. It's my understanding Subaru will be replacing a small number of turbo engines built after early January with a manufacturing defect that could potentially cause early bearing failure.

(updated 4/7/8) Subaru announced a stop sale on all of the 2008/2009 Subaru Impreza, Forester, Legacy and Outback vehicles equipped with a 2.5L Turbo Engine produced with the beginning chassis number and later as shown below "due to several reports of "Engine Knocking Noise” from other markets on vehicles produced after the production dates listed. Initial investigation confirms an internal wear issue on the failed units. In the interest of preventing any possibility of failures for our customers, we have chosen to isolate any potentially affected vehicles by ceasing sales of the potentially affected units until the root cause and correction can be identified. All the other displacement engines and the 2.5L Natural Aspirated Engine are excluded from this action".

1/31/08 Outback review  '.. For once, I didn't dread the forecast of snow because our automotive guest du jour was none other than a tony-looking 2008 Subaru Outback Wagon. It's a car that lives for snow, and it showed as we drove...functions not only well in bad weather, but it surrounds passengers in creature comforts of every description. Subarus, in case you haven't driven one in years, are not the rather modestly appointed tough little cars of old. Legacies and Outbacks have evolved into luxurious, decently priced, upscale automobiles that should be on the shopping lists of practical, value minded consumers who don't want to be punished behind the wheel every day for having thought about function and usefulness first...'  more

12/13 Forester review from Heels on Wheels  'As an automotive journalist, I test drive many different vehicles..  Applause for the Forester to drop its nerdy look and finally get some SUV sex appeal. Critics are loving this car, which has the honor of being awarded Motor Trend's 2009 Sport/Utility Car of the Year. It also became Consumer Report's top-rated small SUV, beating out competitors like the RAV4 and Honda CR-V. The panoramic moonroof is a definite standout. My 2.5-liter 4-cylindar Pzev (Partial Zero Emissions) engine was  $25,623,  which came with great new (free) standards as the moonroof, roof rails and steering wheel mounted controls. The EPA's Green Vehicle Guide gives the Forester a 9.5 out of 10 for reducing air pollution..' the article
12/6 New accessories for Imprezas and Foresters. Interior illumination footwell lighting (a soft red or blue light) for 2009/8 Imprezas and 09 Foresters, and Reverse Assist Sensor (back-up beeper) available on the 09 Forester. These are worth considering and can be dealer installed. The STI 09/08 has standard footwell lighting and the Tribeca has optional reverse assist sensors if you want to see them.

10/23 Forester goes off road with FourWheeler.com
'...On-road, the new Forester is a pleasure to drive with the five-speed; clutch feel is light and engagement a tad abrupt, but with a little practice, rowing through the gears becomes progressively more fun, though the engine takes its time to generate max power...
Off the pavement, the Forester provides a mixed bag of manners. On stretches of high-speed dirt, the little Forester offered a firm, controlled ride and was a blast to drift in corners and launch from small berms (oh yeah, these guys also build Impreza rally cars, huh?). On nastier, slower-speed sections of trail, though, the Subaru's variable-clutch AWD system was slow to get power to the rear wheels (the viscous coupling with the five-speed behaved much more efficiently); the ABS traction control didn't always engage when we would have expected it, resulting in a sometimes-jerky ride; and powering up steep hills was accompanied by a fair amount of rear wheelhop and undercarriage scraping. Bottom line: The new Forester is much happier taking you and your trail toys down dirt country roads to your favorite trailhead; just leave the gnarlier routes to the Jeep guys, and enjoy the ride in a capable, if slightly quirky, crossover rig. And trust us, you don't need to wear Birkenstocks.. ' more
10/15 Forester is MotorTrend's 2009 SUV of the year.
'.. So how does a small, quirky, former airplane manufacturer from the Gunma prefecture of Japan finish first among surprise offerings from established players and bold moves by newcomers? How does it beat a chest-thumping, head-turning macho mobile known as the BMW X6? How, when Ford wraps stylish sheetmetal around a Gulfstream V interior and calls it Flex? How can it win, when Kia serves notice to the entire category with its own body-on-frame, V-8-powered Borrego, and Infiniti conjures up seven-speed transmissions and jaw-dropping bird's-eye-view monitoring systems?
Just how does the Subaru Forester do it?..' read more
10/6 Forester XT test  'With the crossover segment growing so rapidly, it seemed like a good idea to add one of the newest such vehicles to the AutoWeek long-term test fleet...
Our initial impression of the new Forester is that it seems like a solid, well-built piece. The cabin is quiet, even at freeway speeds and despite the aggressive tread pattern of its 225/55R-17 Yokohama Geolander all-season tires.
The boxy design is not to everyone's liking, but form is following function here. The low cargo floor, fold-flat rear seats and tall roofline allow for decent hauling capabilities, always in high demand among the AW staff. A roof rack will give the campers, kayakers, bikers and hunters in the group additional flexibility for hauling their gear.
Inside, the dash layout is simple and straightforward, with a big speedometer dominating the gauge cluster. The navigation and audio systems are controlled via a touch-screen pad, something not everyone likes. The seats have proved to be supportive and comfortable in the few trips we've taken so far.
The only downside noticed right away is the four-speed tranny. Subaru's competitors all have five- and even six-speed autos, and having one more gear would quiet the boxer four even more on the highway while most likely improving the fuel mileage (19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway). We'll pay attention to this in the coming year.
We also expect that the Forester will see a variety of different duties over the next 12 months, and with its standard all-wheel drive, it is sure to become a favorite once the snow starts to fly.' the article

9/27 Forester with an Opossum in the back seat  '..Our first stop in the 2009 Subaru Forester was the liquor store. No, we didn't need a pint of gin to whip up a martini. We needed boxes. And through the years we've found that the liquor store is a grand place to find boxes just the right size for moving books, clothes and other small objects.. Enter the all-new Forester.
One of our favorite small sport utilities now more commonly known as crossovers, for more than a decade, the new Forester has grown slightly in size and sophistication with exterior styling that is handsome and contemporary..  In the case of the new Forester, cargo capacity behind the front seats is nearly 69 cubic feet and the standard four-cylinder boxer engine will take that cargo from point A to point B for the frugal price of 26 miles to the gallon..
Fortunately there wasn't as much drama this time as 10 years ago when we were using the first of three Forester iterations in another move.. Jim had been plagued by an opossum in the garage that apparently enjoyed cat food. What we hadn't counted on was the toothy varmint climbing at some point into the Forester as it was being loaded. We just barely avoided running into a ditch when, after about five miles, we turned to see the critter staring at us, teeth barred, from between the seats.
We arrived at our destination about 10 minutes later, sprang out of the vehicle and started prodding the opossum to exit using a broom stick. Perhaps he thought there was cat food hidden in one of the bins.
The Forester was unique back in those days, one of the early examples of the small station-wagon-like small SUV hatchback. Over the years the Forester has been a favorite of a lot of people because of its relatively good fuel efficiency, easy-to-drive nature, standard all-wheel drive, useable cargo hold and excellent reliability...
Subaru has made evolutionary changes over the years and the Forester remains true to its original concept..
The Forester has always been one of our favorite small SUVs. We like it just as much now with its new styling, larger passenger compartment and excellent drivability.
And we were happy we didn't drive this one with an opossum grinning at us from between the seats.' more

9/11 2009 Forester review from MotherProof  'Forester Enhances 'Granola' Reputation ...many people refer to the Subaru Forester as a “granola” car, often seen in major granola zones like Boulder, Colo. Many people consider me sort of granola-ish, but I’ve never found the Forester appealing. So I was pleasantly surprised when I found it (2009 model)  to be much more interesting than I had previously judged.
I believe that part of the Forester’s granola reputation comes from its go-anywhere attitude, which can be attributed to its standard all-wheel drive. I imagine a super-crunchy Forester owner could drive her car to a remote location and live quite the granola life, with only a tent, some jugs of water and some seedlings.
Obviously, most Forester owners are probably more like me, living a granola-light lifestyle that includes making earth-friendly choices, but still appreciating some of the finer things modern life offers.
In the 2009 Forester, Subaru has made an effort to appeal to the granola-light consumer who wants to have as much convenience and style as possible in a car that delivers good gas mileage, value pricing and the ability to get out of the ’burbs at a moment’s notice...
One thing any self-respecting granola will tell you is that being flashy is a turn-off. Practicality and function win over style and luxury any day...
My favorite interior feature is the Forester’s massive moonroof, which extends over the rear seat. This is no easy feat, as the rear seat features a lot of legroom for even the lankiest passengers. My kids loved being able to see the sky, and it made the car seem more roomy. Another very practical, albeit odd, feature was the rear passengers’ cupholders, which fold out of the center seat-bottom cushion. Obviously, it would be difficult to use if you had a third passenger in the backseat, but so would an armrest-type cupholder...
I didn’t install a child-safety seat in the Forester, but I found that the Latch connectors were easy to access. The connectors are covered with a fabric tab when they’re not in use. Getting my kids buckled into their booster seats was a little more challenging because the Forester’s seat belt receptors were under where the booster naturally rests...
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named the 2009 Subaru Forester a Top Safety Pick for 2008. That’s something everyone on the granola spectrum and beyond can appreciate...' the article

8/17 Forester review 'When Subaru redesigned its Forester wagon for 2009, it transformed the fearless, spunky hauler from purely practical to assertively stylish. That's a big change for a model that once looked as if appearance was the last value its creators considered. As if, after so carefully crafting the vehicle's go-anywhere, all-wheel-drive power system, and its plucky, through-the-muck platform, engineers covered the workings with any old body that fit. The redesigned, 2009 model is still an upright, high-clearance wagon with a wide cargo bay and a long-running roof that's indispensable for hauling mountain bikes and kayaks and such. But like other recently styled crossovers, Forester's sleeker, more streamlined body now motors more comfortably to venues outside of outdoor recreation sites. As a result, (east coast Subaru dealer) Aaron Singer sees newcomers trading in a variety of different models to get the new Subaru. They're giving up SUVs and pickups, of course, but just about everyone is getting out of those. Singer also has new customers exchanging popular Toyota Camry sedans for Foresters. Last week he took a Nissan Altima as a trade-in...' the article
8/11 Forester review ' Forester strives for eco-friendly status.. Drive a SUV through certain segments of society and you're likely to be derided as a fiend personally responsible for blackening the sky, raising gas prices and aiming for people in crosswalks. Why, then, don't Forester drivers, who technically are hauling around town in SUVs, face the same psychic daggers from the Green populace?
It's because Subaru has, rightly, established a reputation for well-made, smart vehicles.. Now, for 2009, it's been both blanded down and given steroids; it's bigger everywhere. What remains is a brickhouse-solid, well-laid out machine that can take it over rough city roads, busy highways and inclement weather..'  the article

7/15  Forester review '.. following the curves and dips of Lake Road in the 2009 Subaru Forester it is hard to imagine what it must have been like on this two-lane in the 1920s, trying to outrun the feds in a big Cadillac weighed down by cases of Canadian booze... The chases must have been something. Even now the road’s whimsical ups, downs and arounds require attention when driven quickly..  The easily recognized little Forester wagon is gone. The 2009 version is larger and has more of a generic crossover appearance.. an inch more ground clearance (8.7 or 8.9 inches depending on the model). That reduces the chance of being high-centered in deep snow or during the gloppiest part of the mud season, known elsewhere as spring...
Even the base model comes with a long list of standard equipment and all the important safety features. That includes electronic stability control (to help prevent skids); antilock brakes; air curtains (which cover the side windows to provide head protection); seat-mounted side-impact air bags up front (to offer chest protection) and “active” head restraints intended to prevent neck injuries in a rear-impact crash.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has given the 2009 Forester its ultimate accolade. The redesigned Subaru gets a Top Safety Pick label for its performance in front, side and rear-impact crash tests and its standard electronic stability control.
The model I tried had the huge and delightful “panoramic” sunroof. The windows are also large, providing wonderful all-around visibility, even when backing up..
Over all, the Forester is more practical and safer than ever. For a relatively small vehicle, its ride is superb and it is an accommodating and pleasant servant... '  more from the NY Times

6/27 2009 Forester review 'The Forester is such a Seattle granola kind of car, it should come with Subaru-logo socks and sandals...  the Subaru Forester has gotten its first total redesign for 2009, and it's actually ... quite handsome. Driver legroom is enough (just) for a 6-footer, and is an inch or two better than in the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. Rear legroom was the leading complaint about t'he previous model — it's much improved, by a whopping 4.3 inches. The rear seats even recline. Headroom is great.. The Forester still drives more like a car than an SUV. As modestly priced wagons go, the cabin is quiet. The horizontally opposed engine and all that all-wheel-drive hardware keep the center of gravity low. Steering feel is excellent. It handles nimbly in traffic, and the now-standard electronic stability control keeps it steady in avoidance maneuvers.. ' more
6/21 Forester review '...  none of the cubistic weirdness of the first one, which seemed to have been cut out with hedge clippers. And yet, the Forester is still unmistakably Subaru.. I  spent a week in the turbo 2.5XT- a feisty, wheel-chirping, gun-it-on-the-freeway kind of week, and I came away impressed... 5/27 Forester review 'Subaru's venerable Forester is growing up. The go-anywhere vehicle, which was born as a station wagon in 1997, is approaching its teenage years as a completely overhauled crossover utility vehicle. That's understandable because this niche between minivans and full-on sport utility vehicles is a crowded market. The Japanese automaker got a lot right, too, because the 2009 Forester is a nice-looking ride, both inside and out. With rising gas prices eating up more of the family budget, a lower price is a good thing. The base model starts at $19,995, and the price tops out at $28,195 for the 2.5XT limited edition. There are also five partial-zero-emission models, too. And the third-generation Forester.. is soccer mom, weekend handyman, homeowner friendly...' the article
5/25 Forester comparison. The Frugal Five: Compact Crossover Comparison. Motortrend compares the Forester to the Nissan Rogue, Honda CRV, Saturn VUE Green Line, Toyota RAV4. 'Three inches separate the herd in length (about the length of an index finger, not very much)..  lowest (horsepower): the CR-V's and RAV4's 166, highest: the Nissan's and Subaru's 170hp...  the all-new 2009 Subaru Forester, mind you-walks off in first place in this survey because it apes almost everything the others do right and sidesteps nearly all their pratfalls. It rides like a La-Z-Boy (credit the new double A-arm rear suspension's 0.8-inch-longer travel), though it can slightly meander at times. It steers with a sweet buildup of rim forces. 5/16 Forester review 'If Subaru didn't invent the crossover sport utility vehicle, it was right there at the category's dawn... Even as the SUV craze took over, Subaru stuck to its guns. In 1997, it became the first brand in the U.S. to make all-wheel drive standard on all models. Subaru jacked up its Legacy and Impreza models and called them Outbacks. In 1997, it brought out the Forester, still a crossover but one that looked more like a boxy SUV... designers took pains to make the new vehicle even more user-friendly.. There are seven new Forester models, starting with the 2.5X at $20,660. That includes all-wheel drive with a five-speed manual gearbox and a high level of standard equipment: stability and traction control, antilock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist, side air bags and side-curtain air bags, active head restraints, air conditioning, remote locking, power windows and cruise control...'  the article
5/4 Forester review: 'Subaru has taken its trusty pooch that was traditionally wrapped in box-like styling and added some French Poodle. It is almost as if the Forester was on an off-road adventure, kissed a frog, and is now ready to be displayed in Vanity Fair.
The '09 (that's right model year '09!), Forester could not be any different from those that Fuji Heavy (the parent company) has cranked out since 1997. It's good they didn't use the parent name in this country, for fear it would be confused with a pro wrestler.
We'd recommend the well-made and priced-right Forester to any consumer who is joining the trend toward cross over vehicles. From its "hawk eye headlights" to its sweeping but simple lines, the new Forester is now the design equal of its competition, the Toyota RAV4 and the Honda CRV. But it's still a very utilitarian little crossover utility vehicle (perish the thought that we should call it a wagon!) with the horizontally opposed 2.5-liter engine, all wheel drive in two forms, and Subaru's continuing promise of quality and durability..  Ask the people in Maine and Vermont. These little rascals last forever.'  read the article
4/23 Canadian Forester prices: X starts at $25,795 ($1,200 less than an 08). Touring starts $27,995, Limited starts $32,395- (whopping $3,700 less than the previous model). The turbocharged 2.5 XT Limited priced $34,895.  Standard features include heated seats, air conditioning, telescoping steering wheel with audio controls.
4/17/08 Crash Test: 09 Forester is a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and gets good performance in front, side, and rear tests and standard DVC electronic stability control. Front crash test, side crash test.
CarandDriver.com 'I have only one friend who drives a Subaru Forester, but I submit she fits the Forester mold: She is what MBAs would describe as an “urban adventurer,” often seen driving with her three blond-and-brownish pound-rescue dogs with indeterminate family trees. She has no immediate plans to drive the Yukon Trail but likes to know that if she had to, her Forester is ready....
On the road, ride and handling are better than you’d expect, regardless of horsepower or trim level. Cornering is relatively flat, with little of the tipsiness found in older Foresters. Braking and steering are linear and properly sensitive.
Off-road, the Subaru Forester won’t replace your Jeep Wrangler, but with an available 8.9 inches of ground clearance, this is more than just a cow trailer. There’s no low-range gearing, of course, but the boxer engine has enough grunt to power up hills and through mudholes. It isn’t a mountain goat, but it is, rather, a slightly more domesticated goat. Subaru has spent 11 years building up customer goodwill for the Forester, and there’s nothing about the new model that will threaten that. In fact, with the lower price and added room, urban adventuring seems more appealing than ever...'  the full article
3/28  Forester review: '...A tip of the hat, then - preferably an outdoorsy, Indiana Jones-type felt fedora - to Subaru product planners. They were very attentive to input from current Forester owners who said not to go overboard in making the 2009 model all that much bigger and more powerful, and consequently more expensive. What emerged from those customer focus sessions was a vehicle that is very much like the first- and second-generation Foresters, only more so. And it's even cheaper than before. Yes, it is larger, but not substantially... has enough grunt to power up hills, through mud holes' more
3/27 Forester review  'Of the modern-era Subarus, the Forester has been the model that most closely reflects the character that the brand was built on: inexpensive, capable, utilitarian, slightly unconventional, and unconcerned with appearances. A Subaru among Subarus, this grungy earth child has been happily chugging along on the crunchy fringe of the compact SUV market. For 2009, the Forester has undergone a redesign that has made it larger, more SUV-like, and, well, more normal. And although the new Forester looks a lot different from the previous model, it manages to retain many of its predecessors strengths while expanding its appeal...' more from automobilemag.com
3/25 Forester review, '... Many of us like our cars, but Forester owners seem to love theirs.. the third generation Forester is off to a good start. Forester has always been about getting the job done.. Subaru has done a commendable job.. They’ve kept the utility, improved the styling, made it quieter and lowered the price. 3/19 09 Forester review:   '... we'd go so far as to say this new Forester is the most handsome and stylish Subaru in years. But don't worry: They've made sure to improve the practical aspects of this cult favorite by equal measures... both manual and automatic Foresters had an easier time traversing the roughest legs of the trail than the Honda CRV... On pavement, the Forester feels more substantial but just as car-like as before. The steering is quick and responsive, and the ride is smoother and better isolated than the last Forester we drove. Inside, its noticeably roomier and upscale..' more from popular mechanics
3/14 09 Foresters arrriving. This is the first redesign in it's 10 year history. The ride is smoother, there's more back seat room, automatic Sportshift is now available, privacy glass is standard on all except X model. The models are X, Premium, LL Bean, and XT turbo.  They are based on the Legacy platform and longer, wider, taller than previous versions but not too long or tall or wide. All good things. You are sickened by the sight of Chevy Suburban. You are a vegan who just loves Home Depot. You would sooner saw your right arm off with a rusty tree saw than vote Republican. 3/11 09 Forester review, part 2 from Jalopnik, 'The original Forester design sought to stuff an SUV into downscaled packaging more palatable to the food co-op set. The 2009 model abandons its predecessors' upright, boxy vibe for something closer to a streamlined crossover approach. Sleeker, yet still oozing functionality ... Not a perfect update ... but a definite improvement that serves up outstanding value while coming off as more capable than the competition when the going gets rugged.  read part 2 from Jalopnik
3/10 09 Forester review, part 1 from Jalopnik, 'Subaru has all kinds of weird shit going on with their brand. That's why we love them--because they aren't Toyota or Honda. They're got the aforementioned hoon-mobile, the justly thrilling WRX STI. Then there's the lesbionic Outback, and the completely baffling Tribeca (Is it a Porsche Cayenne for people who aren't buttholes or a VW Touareg for people who hate Germany but just can't swing with Volvo no more?). I won't remark on the Legacy....' read part one from Jalopink
3/9  New 09 Forester review '...  A Forester with off-road abilities that shames its nearest competitors, demonstrated on a steep, rutted trail on Catalina Island that stopped a Honda CR-V dead in its tracks. Next we hopped in behind the wheel of the Forester and motored right up the hill with no difficulty due in part to the active torque split system that automatically transfers more power to the wheels with the best grip as slippage occurs, a most impressive performance, demonstrating its superior abilities. On the inside Subaru’s engineers took advantage of its extra 3.6 inches of wheelbase to address the previous version’s most serious shortcoming, lack of rear seat legroom. Combined with rounded lower seat cushions and doors that open wider than ever before, rear seat access is dramatically improved, especially for parents who have to deal with bulky child safety seats...' more

Subaru Impreza
news and reviews
2008
12/26 Impreza 2.5i is one the quickest cars under $20000 according to CarAndDriver. They like the usual suspects- Civic, Rabbit, Lancer, Scion, Mazda, Cobalt, Impreza, Mini  etc. the article

12/19 Impreza 2.5GT review (automatic WRX)  '.. What could demonstrate your gayness more than listening to a Lesley Gore CD while driving a Subaru? I’m guilty, but have no apologies — for doing either. I jammed to “It’s My Party” while tooling around in the Impreza 2.5 GT five-door, which bridges power between 2.5i models and the heavy-breathing WRX editions. It was definitely a party, but no crying. (but really, who doesn't like Leslie Gore singing 'its my party and I'll cry if I want to..'?)
Subaru deep-sixed the Impreza wagon and replaced it with a sleeker five-door (for the 08 model). But sedans remain for those of you who aren’t man (or woman) enough to drive something with a hatchback. Styling is shaped a little like Leslie Gore’s bouffant — if her hairdo had a rear hatchback to access large amounts of luggage space and an air scoop to feed its turbocharger. Like the WRX, the Impreza 2.5GT starts with a European rally car as its inspiration...
Heated bun warmers, power moonroof, automatic climate control and an MP3/CD audio system provide background for a rompin’ ride or soothing commute..
I always thought Subaru would make a great entry-level brand for Porsche. Besides a similar engine design, Subarus feel more in touch with the road than most cars. There is a mechanical feel in the steering and suspension that others can’t match. You can almost wish the all-wheel-drive system to move around power so you can throw it into corners or down the Interstate without blinking twice. In snow, sleet, rain or sunshine, I would love it to be mine. Subaru’s renowned homo-friendliness is but one more reason to buy.' the article
12/15 Subaru quits WRC (World Rally Championship) at the end of the 2008 season.  After 20 years and 6 WRC titles, Fuji, Subaru's parent company, is the 2nd team (after Suzuki) to drop rally team sponsorship due to lower sales. The popular WRX and STI are based on Subaru's WRC successes and the good news here is that SoA says  'we have no plans to discontinue our support of the Rally America National Championship, where our Subaru Rally Team USA drivers Travis Pastrana and Ken Block finished 1-2 respectively in the 2008 season, driving 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI-based rally cars.'
Ikuo Mori, president of Fuji Heavy Industries, told reporters  “given the sudden deterioration in the operating environment, we were forced to make this decision” The move will save the company “a few billion yen.” The Tokyo-based company expects net income to drop 46% to 10 billion yen ($111m) in the year ending March 31.
Earlier this year, FIA announced starting in 2010, the WRC would use Spec 2000 (or S2000) cars with 2.0L turbo engines instead of the current Group N cars.
11/19 iPod interface, optional on 08/09 Impreza and 09 Forester, recharge function doesn't work with new iPod Nano 4th generation and Touch 2nd generation. Other functions still work,  they just don't recharge through the connection. Subaru is working on a new version of the interface.
11/4 2008 rebates. STI gets 0% financing for 60 months, plus dealer volume bonus $0-2500-3500-5000 through January 2nd!. WRXs get $2500 and more!

10/21 Incorrect window sticker- 2009 WRX. The 09 WRX comes with Dunlop Sport Summer Performance Tires. The first 2009 WRX window stickers incorrectly said all season tires. If you purchased one with an early sticker, your dealer may be able to supply an updated one.
10/13 2009 WRX review   '..When the redesigned 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX hit the market, many enthusiasts expressed concern. The new WRX gave priority to civility and comfort, rather than outright driving excitement.. Guess what? Subaru listened... with a stiffer suspension, better tires, and a bigger turbocharger... A mere 1.6 sec pass before 30 mph is reached..
Stickier Dunlop tires and a stiffer suspension -- front and rear springs are up 43 and 42%, respectively, and anti-roll bars up 1 mm on both ends -- help to send the WRX through our figure-eight in 26.3 sec and around the skidpad at 0.85g
While this WRX blows away last year's model and out-accelerates everything in class, it might not be enough to conquer the competition. Mitsubishi's Lancer Ralliart provides the most direct threat, matching the WRX's all-wheel drive and upping the ante with a trick new dual-clutch gearbox. Track rats should also keep an eye on the Chevy Cobalt SS and MazdaSpeed3, two cars that never fail to entertain.'  from motortrend
10/11 Road Test-  WRX,  Cobalt SS, Lancer Ralliart and Mazdaspeed3 go round and round the track
'There's no getting around it: We live in a tough new world of $4 per gallon gasoline, and a U.S. economy that has its share of difficulties. But enthusiasts still need to have fun, right? Luckily, small turbocharged engines make sense, as they offer decent fuel economy when driven like Grandma..
Ralliart...think of the Ralliart as a mild Evo for those who don't want to deal with the frenzied nature and harsh ride of the real thing. While it's a neat car in some aspects, we'll admit we were a bit let down from a pure performance standpoint
Mazdaspeed3 ...but in its sweet spot, it hits far harder than any other engine in this test. We found the following strategy works so as not to get caught out by the narrow powerband: If you're coming to a turn and you're thinking of downshifting...don't. This torque beast will pull you through. It's the opposite with upshifting...if you're even considering it, absolutely do it. Because the last thing you want is to be caught out up high in the revs where there's no power.
WRX ...WRX has a nice, supple ride that doesn't sacrifice too much handling precision. And although the WRX didn't win any outright handling categories, such as the slalom or skidpad, it posted the best time around the autocross, beating the Cobalt SS by 0.16 sec. "It feels more settled and relaxed when driven hard compared to the others," said Hong, while Kott, our resident autocross Meister, said, "It felt great through fast slalom sections —
Cobalt ...despite those racy wheels and new front air dam, let's face it: it still looks like a Cobalt, which means bland with a capital "B." But maybe that's part of its allure: "It's a sleeper car," said Hong, "and no one will expect it to be so fast."
and the winner is ...because the Cobalt SS doesn't just compete with the foreign cars, it beats them. It is the hottest-performing sports compact you can buy in the U.S. for under $30,000. That it's also the least expensive in this test is even more reason to rush to your Chevy dealer immediately. Not only will it help stimulate the economy, but every aspect of your enthusiast driving senses as well.' the full article at roadandtrack

10/8 Impreza 2.5GT is an automatic WRX  '... The 2.5GT is a new addition to the Impreza lineup (which also includes the 2.5i, WRX and STI). In many ways, it picks up where last year's WRX left off, with the same 224 horsepower turbocharged engine and the same anonymous styling. (The 2009 WRX, meanwhile, has moved on to bigger and better things, with more power and a fancier body kit.) The 2.5GT is also the only choice for Subaru hot-rodders who can't drive a stick -- it comes exclusively with a 4-speed automatic transmission, while the WRX can now only be had with a manual transmission. Price-wise, the GT sits between the WRX and the king-of-the-hill STI, mostly because the 2.5GT comes with a bunch of nice-to-haves that are extra-cost options on lesser Imprezas.
Like the 2.5i, the Impreza 2.5GT is available as a 4-door sedan or, for $500 more a handy mini-wagon.. The 2.5GT is powered by a turbocharged version of the 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine found in the Impreza 2.5i..  produces an extra 54 horsepower and 56 lb-ft of torque -- but, like most turbo engines, it doesn't really start to cook until above 3,000rpm. Power for passing and hill-climbing is fantastic, but there's little advantage around town. The GT not only uses more gas than the 2.5i -- I averaged around 20 MPG, compared to 24.6 in the last 2.5i I tested -- but it requires premium fuel...  suspension is set up for a ride-and-handling balance mid-way between the 2.5i and the WRX. In character, it's definitely closer to the WRX; with the right moves it's possible to get the tail to slide around a bit, which can be a lot of fun if you're expecting it but quite frightening if you aren't. The ride is soft and compliant, just like the 2.5i, which makes it comfortable for cruising or commuting but problematic in the curves -- if a series of bumps sets the Impreza's suspension rocking, it makes it difficult to keep all four wheels planted firmly on the pavement. That said, with all-wheel-drive and electronic stability control both standard, the Impreza keeps a better (and safer) grip on the road than most of its rivals, even more so when the weather turns bad.
What if you want to go fast? Then forget the 2.5GT and go for the WRX, which looks better and has significantly more power. Can't drive a stick? Then try Mitsubishi's comparably-priced Lancer Ralliart, which gets a 237 hp turbocharged engine, all-wheel-drive, and a sophisticated six-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission.
Bottom line: The Impreza 2.5GT misses the mark. The extra equipment and extra performance as compared to other Impreza models don't justify the higher price and running costs. The Impreza 2.5i and WRX remain high on my list of favorites. But the Impreza 2.5GT? Skip it..' more

8/25 09 WRX comments
from Jalopink '.. Go home!" Something about the 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX makes you want to speed. And here in Canada, where they take the law literally, blatantly flouting limits really stands out. Of course, something about the WRX will always sit uncomfortably with the surrounding world, no matter the pace. While it's been modified for 2009, just one year after its launch with 41 more horsepower, stiffened suspension and STI-esque bodykit, it remains one of the ugliest cars on sale...' more
from Autoweeek: 'Automakers aren't big on admitting mistakes. Although Subaru folks won't go so far as to say they screwed up the all-new 2008 Impreza WRX introduced last year, they've already developed an improved 2009 model. You don't need Judge Judy to tell you that's an admission that they missed the target on the first attempt.  WRX devotees and the enthusiast press blasted Subaru for making the new car too soft. The people spoke, and Subaru listened. "The '08 car was a big leap forward, and it brought in a lot of new customers," said Martyn Harding, Impreza product-planning manager. "But it was just not exciting..." autoweek
from Motortrend 'You might forgive the styling if the 2008 WRX handled anything like its less-ungainly predecessor. Subaru understands that, and has resharpened the WRX's chassis just one year into the new model cycle, while adding 41 horses and 18 lb-ft, making it a better match for the 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart's 237 hp and 253 lb-ft... ' more
from caranddriver.com "..There are few problems that more horsepower can’t fix or at least help you ignore. And as a perfect case study, we bring you the 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX. Our first impression of the new-for-2008 WRX left us hot and cold. Interior quality, overall refinement, and noise isolation were vastly improved, but the WRX lacked the thrill of the previous car. The engine was largely unchanged, and weight gain was nonexistent, but the WRX came off as more of an Impreza GT than the street version of a rally car, a trait its predecessors had in spades. And with the Mazdaspeed 3, Chevrolet Cobalt SS, and Dodge Caliber SRT4 all making more than 260 horsepower, the WRX looked anemic by comparison with only 224 ponies on tap.
So Subaru has addressed these issues with a few updates, the most notable being a power boost to 265 horsepower, an increase of 41. These changes only apply to the manual-transmission WRX; the automatic continues unchanged in all but name and is now appropriately known as the Impreza 2.5GT. Subaru’s marketing plan is to align the 2.5GT with the naturally aspirated 2.5i model and liken the WRX to the 305-hp STI. To that effect, the WRX now shares a grille with the STI, and the optional body kit becomes standard. The five-door WRX also gets the rear spoiler from the STI...' more

8/21 Impreza review  'I recently had the good fortune to spend several days in San Diego on vacation with my family. My trusty ride was a Lightning Red 2008 Subaru Impreza, and it was the perfect car for the job. It’s easy to overlook the Impreza next to its more famous competitors — cars like the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. But Imprezas, like all Subarus, come with standard all-wheel drive. Subarus are famous for their ruggedness. Early on, they became favorites of skiers and campers for their ability to get to where the action is in comfort and with economical and reliable service.
Our test vehicle, despite its compact proportions, swallowed up our luggage with ease.. The new car has borrowed from the BMW stylebook, a common industry practice... If you are seeking reliable, even amusing, transportation with the safety of four-wheel drive, why settle for an ordinary car?'  the article
8/14 STI ECM Reprogramming note Subaru will mail owner notification letters on or around August 15, 2008. 'SoA has initiated a Service Program (WVE-15) to reprogram the Engine Control Module (ECM) on certain 2008 Impreza WRX STI vehicles. Under certain harsh driving patterns, specifically when repeatedly or continuously operating the engine above the “red-line” (RPM above 6,700), abnormal combustion could occur resulting in serious internal engine damage in the form of broken piston ring lands. This abnormal combustion condition is the result of an “over lean” fuel mixture caused by a combination of fuel cut activation and high turbo boost. To prevent this condition from occurring, Subaru has developed a modification to the Engine Control Module software logic that will improve combustion management above “red-line” engine speed. This revised logic will not adversely affect peak vehicle performance. On or around August 14, 2008, dealers will be sent affected VIN lists by their Area Service Office. Prior to performing repairs, confirm coverage by using the Vehicle Coverage Inquiry in the Dealer Communication System (DCS). Vehicles that have been updated by Subaru will appear "completed" in DCS.'

7/27 Impreza review  '..The Impreza – and Subaru, for that matter – focus on impressing the consumer with vehicle performance. The company has achieved just that as the Impreza is 2008 Consumer Report's recommendation and Subaru is ranked just behind Toyota in all-over manufacturer satisfaction... The Impreza looks and acts quite racy (it is actually raced in the World Rally Championships). Subaru's style caters to more of an adventurous or practical woman – but it's the reliability and safety on a vehicle like the Impreza that should speak to all women..
The Impreza is a 2008 Consumer Reports recommended vehicle. It has been noted by the magazine for its standard, all-wheel drive traction; short braking; low beam headlights; handling on corners. The best part about all these important accolades is the Impreza has an expected above average reliability.. Subaru vehicles are moderately priced.. The Impreza is not the most feminine nor flashest cars a female can drive, but it is one of the most reliable and with a racy attitude. It's more for the outdoor type seeking modest piazza not found in the Subaru wagons.' the article on Heels of Wheels

7/25 Impreza 2.5i review  '.. A lot of car for the cash. What a treat. A simple, sensible, pleasant car with all-wheel drive (AWD), decent fuel economy, comfortable seats and relatively good people space.
Meet the redesigned Subaru Impreza. Generally in the backwaters of consideration when shoppers head out to acquire a smallish car, Impreza now makes more sense than many rivals; it certainly makes more sense than it ever has...
You'll find a car that you can just get into and go. No fuss. No complications.
The downside: There's not a great amount of excitement, nor a bushel of premium ambience. In fact, the insides will remind some shoppers of their last rental car — a bit barren and off-putting.
The test car's all-wheel-drive system performed very well. It provided plenty of traction. Impreza is a pleasing machine despite the plain interior and the undistinguished exterior (which still is better than some of the "styling" you get when Japanese designers are let off the leash)...'  read the article
7/13  another 2008 STI Long Term Road Test Update this one from roadandtrack.com. The newest addition to our fleet, now happily past the break in mileage threshold, is an absolute hoot to drive now that redline is no longer off limits. We've yet to make much use of the driver-adjustable center diff other than the recommended settings for aggressive tarmac driving ("Auto —"), but can't bring ourselves to come close to a gravel-strewn road without thoughts of nasty pockmarks in our perfect charcoal gray paint. That doesn't mean our rally replica has been completely bored these last 500 miles. We recently participated in the first North American running of the European-based Fun Cup race series at a NASA endurance event, and our STI came along as race support...or so we thought, as we were unexpectedly given the opportunity to do some reconnaissance laps in the HPDE 4/Time Trial group. The STI proved to be the perfect car for the task as we comfortably ran mid-pack, two-up the entire time alongside prepped time-trial cars of various classes. This just goes to show the immense potential of this daily driver straight out of the box...oh, and it got three of us home after the event, packed full of luggage and camera equipment. How can you not love this car? ' more from roadandtrack.com

7/11 STI Long Term Road Test Update, this one from caranddriver.com 'In its nearly four months with us, the STI hasn’t ventured too far from the home office in Ann Arbor, Michigan, making it as far as, uh, Ohio, along with Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Part of that reason is simply the unfortunate reality of cargo- and people-space needs; our long-term Mazda CX-9 gets much more road-trip attention.. But that’s not to say we’re not enjoying driving the STI. At least one editor thought we made the wrong call in the Evo vs STI vs VW R32 comparison test, saying that “the STI is far more refined than the Evo GSR” and also that it has “better seats, shifter, driving position, and interior styling, while the exterior looks are a wash. The seats are certainly up to the long-haul task, too, as the lone staffer who’s driven serious miles reported: “Great seats, even with 20-plus hours logged behind the wheel during a 1200 mile road trip..  And we haven’t gotten sick of the STI’s black and gold color combination or its serious performance and hyper flared styling that one person put into context by comparing it with the Corolla-with-a-hood-scoop boringness of the regular WRX.. One knock against the 0.93-g worthy Dunlop SP Sport 600 tires is that they tend to sing during steady state cruising.. Other staffers argue that for $37,878 the STI should include heated exterior mirrors and garment hooks in the rear. Also, the aluminum look trim in the much-improved interior is already showing signs of wear in places.. more from caranddriver.com

7/8 Impreza 2.5i review 'It was the second Sunday of May and the third day of rain. We felt lucky, and for the most mundane reason. We were in the right car, the 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i Premium sedan. Subaru is much like a wise parent. It gives you everything you need — well-constructed body; symmetrical all-wheel drive; a flat four-cylinder engine (one with horizontally opposed cylinders and a longitudinal layout) that enhances vehicle stability and handling; and reasonable fuel economy in a car that uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Impreza is no longer outright ugly. It is now mainstream common.. Likes: Stable ride. Good acceleration and handling. Impressive all-wheel-drive performance. Dislikes: Vanilla exterior styling. The well-laid-out interior also is somewhat bland. An aging four-speed automatic transmission is a drawback in an era of five-speeds. The four-speed hinders performance (as does the car's curb weight)...'  from Warren Brown of the Washington Post

7/7 Impreza 2.5i vs Lancer review 'If you'll forgive me for invoking a hallowed piece of genre-defining cinema, there's a moment in The Brady Bunch Movie that always tends to stick in my head. Jan Brady, the middle of three sisters, has grown mildly psychotic, and she's begun talking to herself..
This, in turn, brings me to the Mitsubishi Lancer and the Subaru Impreza. Yep, you read that right: I said Lancer and Impreza with nary a hint of the words "Evolution" or "STI". These are the forgotten sisters, the base-model Jan Bradys of the hot-turbo-rally-clone world. They don't have turbochargers, fancy big-bolstered seats, or massive multi-piston brakes. They have no rally pedigree. These cars are almost perpetually ignored by the media and the public at large, cursed as they are with low horsepower numbers and a lack of drama. They do not, to coin a phrase, get all the good drawers..
While either one of these cars would be a fine choice for daily transportation, the needs of most people-ok, most people we hang out with-are a little more complex than that. As such, we tend to be drawn towards the Impreza. The Lancer offers a lot for the money, but the Subaru is simply more fun, and it feels much better built..' from automobilemag.com
7/3 STI review 'I was anxiously looking forward to test-driving the new Subaru Impreza WRX STI. This high performance model is a complete success: deliciously beautiful, more civilized and comfortable than ever and yet every bit as fun to drive. For 2008, the STI is only available as a 5-door hatchback.. designers managed to soften the lines while creating a leaping tiger look. The bulging fenders explicitly show how the beast flexes its muscles. And the monstrous rear wing has been replaced by a subtle spoiler integrated to the roofline. The car not only looks better but also more aerodynamic.. Still, some elements ought to be revised. A digital odometer would be easier to read than the current indicator. Also, the redline warning alarm of the tachometer should be easier to program.. The driver is treated like a star inside the STI, but the front passenger also enjoys a comfortable seat (though with less adjustments). The navigation system is easy to configure and the stereo delivers good sound quality.. SI Drive system encourages moderate driving while making the car smoother and more fuel-efficient -- perfect for rush hours. Should you demand more dynamism, you can shift in Sport mode. I used it on byroads and it allowed me to focus more on handling performance. Yet, I preferred the Super Sport mode, which delivers instant throttle response.. revised to smoothen the ride compared to last year's car. While the latter was more geared for the track, the new model is suited for both the track and the road..'  from auto123

6/6 STI long-term road test  '.. this Subie doesn't really require an introduction, nor do we feel the need to fabricate a clever reason why we requested one to join the ranks of our long-term fleet..  Aside from returning impressive knockout power from a relatively small package of 2.5 liters, the STI has matured significantly in appearance and character..  A stiffer platform, revised suspension and longer wheelbase aid handling dynamics, ride comfort and interior volume, and the hard numbers do not lie. Subjectively the STI may have strayed a little too much to the softer side of things, at least for some hard-core enthusiasts..' read the article from roadandtrack.com
6/2 STI with performance upgrades from Cobb Tuning. 'This little Subaru wagon will beat a Shelby GT500 Mustang to 60 before dropping it like a bad habit around the nearest corner. Jump on the brakes at the same speed, and it'll stop in a retina-detaching 98 feet-as short as a $200,000 Porsche 911 GT2..  The bulk of the performance gains come from the custom "maps" downloaded on to the ECU via AccessPORT, a handheld computer-based system...' more from motortrend.com.
The screening process consists of several steps to inspect the condition of the engine oil to determine if the engine is not affected by the contamination, is already damaged, or has a potential for damage...' read more
4/11  STI review: 'While some people bemoan the fact that Subaru made the STI a hatchback, you can at least take comfort in knowing that the decision was for performance reasons. That extra rigidity from the rear roof section goes a long way, a Subaru engineer admitted to us last fall.
This STI is a vast improvement over the outgoing car in many ways. The former was a monster in a straight line but only so-so when it came to chucking it around a turn. The new car keeps the rocket-ship acceleration but adds nice cornering ability to its bag of tricks. Thank the stiffer chassis, the new rear double-wishbone suspension and the adjustable center differential to help dial out the understeer. We would, however, like to see a better brake package to bleed off speed as quickly as the engine generates it.
The suspension is noticeably cushier, and there is an unexpected amount of body roll for a flagship performance vehicle, but it's a tradeoff for better on-road mannerisms. It's all part of the plan to appeal to a wider audience that doesn't like being jolted by every rut and pothole in the road. This also explains the quieter and more comfortable cabin.
It is fun to play with the adjustability offered with SI-Drive, the center differential and dynamic controls that can be set to maintain power during an intentional drift. The amount of technology is certainly worthy of a flagship vehicle..'  the full article

4/1 Impreza performance parts. Subaru releases the 2008 Impreza SPT (Subaru Performance Tuning) Cat-Back Exhaust Systems. 3/31 Impreza 2.5i review: 'The 2008 Subaru Impreza boasts one of the largest (2.5 liters) and mightiest (170 horsepower) engines in its class, as well as standard all-wheel drive. At the dragstrip, though, the 2.5i Premium Impreza model we tested unintentionally had us singing Zs, posting slow 0-to-60 (9.5 seconds) and leisurely quarter-mile times... That said, zeroing in on the Subie's lack of zip would be missing its merits. Thanks in part to an all-new multilink rear suspension, which replaces the previous struts, the Impreza not only delivers a plush ride, but also commendable handling and braking.. The structure is Lexus-solid, the chassis Audi-capable, and the base price, at $19,140, is among the best in its class. Now if only the acceleration and transmission were the best...' more from motortrend, com
3/12 Diesel WRX?  'A senior brand insider has revealed to Autocar that Subaru UK wants to sell a hot diesel-powered version of the Impreza WRX in the UK. Subaru’s new diesel boxer engine, currently only on offer in the Legacy, is likely to be offered in the Impreza in its current state of tune before the end of the year – and Subaru has already hinted that more powerful versions of the engine will follow....  the diesel engine will also spread throughout the Subaru range, including the new Forester later this year.'  read more
3/8 STI review  '... pulling out of the hotel parking lot, I switched the throttle mapping into Sport Sharp, the differential to max, the traction control off and gunned it. By the time we reached the first hairpin, the STI and I had already found the rev-limiter and arrived at an agreement. I was going to drive it hard, and it was going to let me. 2/8, Impreza review:  '... new four-door sedan larger than before, and the new five-door model replacing the previous wagon, yet combining sportiness with surprising utility...  The 2008 Subaru Impreza 2.5i four-door sedan is pleasing on all fronts. 2/4 WRX STI review '... the Impreza WRX STI I’m driving this week is about as close to an off-the-showroom-floor race car that money can buy. For the folks who think Subaru only makes dependable all-wheel drive family station wagons like Outback and Forrester, this is a big surprise.. The WRX STI is about maximum performance for minimal cash out... the question on everyone's mind is which is better, Evo or STI. They’re both great cars. I like Mitsu’s Twin Clutch transmission a lot, plus the Recaro seats hold me more snugly in hard cornering. Those living in the real world will appreciate the more useful hatch design of the Sube and a larger cargo hold....'  more
1/26 Impreza Outback Sport review: 'It's difficult to mention a Subaru Impreza without thinking of the WRX, the turbo performer introduced in 2001 that proved to be the master of all road and weather conditions. The 2008 Impreza Outback Sport has a m much different shape ... big enough for four adults on a daylong outing with plenty of gear. That capacity is impressive making the interior feel family-size... standard heated seats, side mirrors, and windshield-wiper resting pad...' more

1/16 STI review '...Subaru's decision to build the STI on the Impreza's five-door wagonette body style rather than the sedan is easy to question, but ultimately tough to fault. It's hard to call it a pretty car, with a longish snout topped by a gaping scoop, swollen fenders, and a pinched rear end that sports quad exhuast tips, clear-lens LED taillamps, and an awning-like spoiler over the rear glass. And yet, there's no frivolity here, nothing added that doesn't support the car's raison d'être. And when you're done risking your driver's license for the day, it's awfully handy to lift the hatchback, drop the rear seats, and load 'er up. We slotted in a six-foot stepladder, gobs of groceries, and various other whatnots with no trouble. This is a Subaru, after all.... In the end, however, this latest iteration of Subaru's rally-inspired hero car is just dizzyingly great. Has it grown up a bit? Absolutely. Call it more comfortable, call it quieter, call it better-equipped. Just don't call it soft.' the article
1/11/08 WRX review,  '..Subarus have, as a rule, lived in relative obscurity. In many respects, it is because there has always been a touch of the weird and/or wacky. The latest version of Subaru's WRX comes in from left field and runs with its mainstream competition...  stylistically contemporary... shades of the Mazda3... but at least it no longer resembles an AMC Pacer. A perkier package that features framed windows.. packs enviable bang for the buck... fast, dynamic, refined.. ' more

7/23 Subaru 360 wins 2000 ralley. Wow, that's a lot of miles in an itty-bitty car.  The 360 was the first Subaru car available in the US, imported by Malcom Bricklin. It was a cute little Japanese car and I sure wouldn't want to drive very far in one, much less 2000 miles.  '..Four UK Subaru fans have returned home victorious after putting the manufacturer’s original model, the 360cc microcar, to the ultimate test - a 2,000-mile rally through some of Europe’s toughest terrain including Italy’s Stelvio and Gavia Passes. It is the world’s only International rally for sub-500cc cars and attracted over 75 entrants, some of whom successfully travelled through Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy and Slovenia... Both cars are from the 1967 and 1968 model years and are powered by two-cylinder, air-cooled two-stroke engines mounted in the rear and producing a dizzying 20 PS each – less than some single seater petrol lawnmowers... Subaru’s 360 microcar was never officially exported into Europe but did, perversely, find its way into the United States where some spare parts can still be found...'  read the article.  More details on the 360

12/28 Subaru 2 door delayed -  Subaru and Toyota have delayed the production of their jointly developed sports coupe announced earlier this year.  The 2+2 coupe has been pushed back at least 18 months, to 2012.
12/17 It's official - the concept car at Detroit auto show will be a first look at what might be the 2010 Legacy. As expected, it has the larger 3.6L 6 cylinder engine currently in the Tribeca, Is this the end for the current 3.0L H6? See an image of the Legacy concept car here.
'SoA today announced that the Subaru Legacy Concept will debut at the 2009 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit January 11th. The NAIAS is open to the public January 17 through 25, 2009. Celebrating 20 years of the Legacy sedan, the Legacy concept showcases the direction of future Legacy sedan design. The exterior highlights the sportiness and dynamism befitting a car powered by a 3.6-liter Horizontally-Opposed Boxer engine. A distinctive front fascia and flared wheel arches establish a powerful road presence and hint at the exceptional handling promised by the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and low center of gravity. The interior embodies modern, high-tech architecture while delivering a comfortable environment for occupants.
The Subaru Legacy series was first introduced in 1989 and next year it will celebrate its 20th anniversary of the start of production. Manufactured in Gunma, Japan and Lafayette, Indiana USA, global production has exceeded 3.6 million units.* The United States accounts for 43% of the production volume.
12/8 Concept car- Subaru at the Detroit auto show Jan 11-13, with a concept car in addition to the usual group of Outback, Forester, Tribeca and Impreza.
What will the concept car be? That's the question and there are many possibilities.
an updated 09 STI with more power, which would explain the recent fire sale on the 08 STIs,
or the long anticipated diesel,
or a preview of the 2010 Outback, perhaps a US version of the Exiga already available in Japan,
or a rendering of the new joint Subaru-Toyota sport coupe- the Toybaru or Subatoy?
or a US version of the Diahatsu subcompact being built for the Japan,
or a Stella or R1e electric car for the US market,
or the just announced Subaru bicycle, the Subaru XB, with a 27-speed derailleur and alloy frame
So many choices... any thoughts? Check Concept cars for the Exiga, R1E etc

10/31 Two Forester XT turbo concepts cars shown at the 2008 auto parts show in Las Vegas.
The Forester XTI is a high performance concept car with an estimated 0-60 time under 5 seconds, an STI engine and drivetrain, making 315hp (the STI is normally 305), STI DCCD differential, adjustable coil over suspension, short throw 6spd transmission, Brembo brakes, stainless steel cat-back exhaust, 18x8 forged alloys, and an aero package with front mesh grill, rear spoiler.
The Forester Mountain Rescue Concept has more than 14" of ground clearance with an Air Lift custom adjustable ride height air suspension system and huge Yokohama Geolandar 30 x 9.5-in. tires on special 15" wheels.
Other upgrades include custom front and rear DeeZee skid plates, Bushwacker Trail Armor fender flares, door cladding, rear gate guard and tail light guards, Subaru Baja sport activity lights (remember those?), 7 roof mounted LED spotlights, a 9,500lb winch, remote rear door openers, extra wide round crossbars and a rescue toboggan!  But mostly it has 14" of ground clearance! photos

9/8 Subaru electric car. The test of the R1e electric car with the NYC Port Authority scheduled for late summer 2008 has been postponed until spring 2009. In the meatime, Subaru has plans to sell 200 Stella electric cars in Japan in 2009. The Stella is an electric city commuter car that charges overnight with a household outlet, seats 4, and goes up to 50 miles on lithium ion batteries. Fuji plans up to 200 units during the car's first year, with no immediate plans for the US. See more
9/5 Diesel in Europe Fuji (SoA parent) will show Forester and Impreza 2.0L diesels at the October Paris Motor Show. The Forester 2.0D and Impreza 2.0D models will be for sale in Europe later. Legacy and Outback diesels are already available.

diesel review  ' ..Europeans have been driving it (the diesel) in the Legacy and Outback since January, and in about a month, after the Paris Auto Show, they'll have it in the new third-gen Forester, too. Americans...well, we'll have to wait, but we could get the boxer-diesel Forester sometime in 2010. If, that is, Subaru gets the message (wink wink) that American buyers are seriously interested...
The twin-cam, four-cylinder mill displaces 2.0L, feeds off a common-rail fuel-delivery system, and breathes via 16 valves and a variable-nozzle turbo. Output is 145 hp at 3600 rpm but the engine makes a manly 258 lb-ft of torque at just 1800 rpm (compared with 226 lb-ft for the Forester's 2.0L turbo gas engine).
Mated to the new engine is a new six-speed manual transmission designed especially for the boxer diesel. Subaru currently has no automatic capable of handling the diesel's lofty torque output, and given the relatively low volumes anticipated for the diesel the company isn't inclined to spend big bucks on creating a new one. Expect the manual to be the one and only transmission offering when (if?) the Forester diesel eventually makes its stateside debut..
Official (US) EPA fuel economy figures of course aren't yet available, but in Europe the Forester 2.0D is rated at an amazing 37 mpg city/highway combined. If you're a driver who likes to pour on the miles, here's your rig: With its 16.9-gallon fuel tank, the 2.0D has a range of more than 600 miles. Got a boat or a trailer? No problem. With the tank-like boxer diesel, the Forester 2.0D can tow up to 4400. The engine lights off with a pushbutton starter and settles into a subdued clatter. You know right away it's a diesel, but the sound from beneath the hood isn't intrusive. Pull away from a stop and in a blink the turbo spools up and you're surging ahead. This isn't a quick car by any means: Subaru claims a 0-to-62-mph time of 10.4 seconds. Instead, think "stout." On an incline, the diesel powers up without fuss or undue shifting. On the autobahn, it hovered along at 90 mph with a refined thrum... Compared with the gas Forester, the diesel will sticker for roughly 2000 euros ($2800) more in Europe. Given its superior fuel economy and enhanced "greenness" (not to mention that formidable towing prowess), the 2.0D should prove popular indeed across the Atlantic. Even with the premium Americans currently pay for diesel fuel, the Forester 2.0D makes sense on many levels. The question is, How bad do you want it? Send your applause Subaru's way. A few whoops and cheers wouldn't hurt, either..'  more from motortrend.com

6/16 Hydrogen Fuel Cell update
Honda's FCX Clarity advanced hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle came off the line today at the world's first dedicated fuel cell vehicle manufacturing facility in Japan. After 19 years of development, the arrival of this 'real world' fuel cell car marks the beginning of a new era of cleaner motoring. Powered by an electric motor that runs off electricity generated in the fuel cell, the only emission is water, and its fuel efficiency is three times that of a modern gas automobile. Lease sales are scheduled to begin in July in the U.S. and this fall in Japan. The combined sales plan for Japan and the U.S. calls for a few dozen units within a year and about 200 units within three years.
The first five Clarity fuel cell cars in the US go to:  #1 is film producer Ron Yerxa, in July. The remaining four are author actress Jamie Lee Curtis and filmmaker husband Christopher Guest; car enthusiast Jim Salomon, actress Laura Harris, and Jon Spallino, already the world's first retail fuel cell vehicle customer, who has been leasing the current FCX since 2005. The three Southern California Honda dealers are Power Honda Costa Mesa, Honda of Santa Monica, and Scott Robinson Honda in Torrance. (see more dated 6/7 below)
6/16  Ireland gets the diesel. Initially only be fitted to European-market cars...  the engine has liquid mounts.. the five-speed manual gearbox has higher ratios to suit the diesel’s stronger torque and lower engine speed.. power-steering is now electric..  .. rigid semi-closed deck design..  five main bearings ..  Extra water-cooling slits have been added between the cylinder bores and the high-strength pistons are squirted with oil to enhance cooling .. high-strength crankshaft...
6/7 Hydrogen Fuel Cells..  is 2008 to the gas engine what 1903 was to the horse and buggy? The Ford Model A came out in 1903, but the Model T arrived in 1908 and it was the end for the horse and buggy. Are we at the turning point?
Toyota's fuel cell vehicle (FCV) goes over 500 miles, Honda's FCX Clarity over 350 miles, on one tank of hydrogen.  Both plan limited releases this year, Honda in California and Toyota in Japan. In 2002, Toyota leased hydrogen cell cars ($10,000 month for 30 months) to government bodies and energy companies for trial runs. In 2006, Mazda had a car running on hydrogen cells and gasoline. Without hydrogen, it runs on gasoline. (Ford owns app 30% of Mazda). Japan already has state-owned hydrogen fueling stations, most in Tokyo, and a few energy-related companies have their own. The Japanese government plans for 10 million homes to be powered by fuel cells by 2020 and almost 3000 homes already get power and hot water from a small household unit about the size of a suitcase. In 2005, the Japanese Prime Minister's residence was the first house in the world equipped with a domestic fuel cell but now Matsushita (Panasonic), Honda and Toshiba are working on, and planning to sell, the home units. Boeing even has a small fuel cell airplane. Hydrogen can come from natural gas, hydrocarbons, methane (garbage).  The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) recently issued a Funding Opportunity for up to $130 million for the development of fuel cells. There aren't many places to get hydrogen, yet anyway. this is from a variety of sources.
6/4 Rocker Neil Young is working on an electric Lincoln. Neil Young, a favorite rock and roller of mine from way back, is making a battery powered 1959 Lincoln convertible. Those better be some real big batteries.  '..Young has teamed up with Johnathan Goodwin, a Wichita mechanic who has developed a national reputation for re-engineering the power units of big cars to get more horsepower but use less fuel. The two are looking to convert Young's 1959 Lincoln Continental convertible to operate on an electric battery. Ultimately, they said, they want the Continental to provide a model for the world's first affordable mass-produced electric-powered automobile...'  from msnbc.com

4/24 Boxer Diesel review (the diesel is now for sale in Europe, nothing about when it might come here). 'Now that the air-cooled Volkswagen Beetle and its siblings rest in peace, only Porsche and Subaru stand by the boxer-engine principle. In a worldwide first, the Japanese have now taught the horizontally opposed piston engine to feed on diesel fuel. The layout? A 2.0-liter, aluminum-block, four-cam four-cylinder.
We tried the promising fuel miser in the Legacy sedan and the Outback wagon, and we came away impressed. Like all horizontally opposed engines, Subaru's new diesel eliminates second-order shaking forces. The end result is a smoothness - and a lack of noise - not usually associated with an oil burner. The 148-hp four-cylinder revs to a 4400-rpm redline, and although it's not ridiculously quick (60 mph arrives in 8.5 seconds, according to Subaru), prompt accelerator-pedal response and a wide, middle-of-the-tach sweet spot go a long way. Fuel economy is expected to average about 40 mpg in Legacy-based applications, and top speed will likely approach 130 mph.
Subarus' diesel hits Europe this month, but happily, its stateside arrival isn't far off - American Subaru dealers are due to see it in 2010. Subaru of America has not yet decided which vehicles it will offer with the diesel, but the Legacy, the Outback, and the Forester seem like obvious candidates. As one would expect, the usual modern diesel equipment will be present, including common-rail, high-pressure fuel injection; four valves per cylinder; a particulate filter; and a variable-vane turbocharger.
If 148 hp doesn't seem like much, fear not: an output bump is reportedly in the works, along with a six-cylinder variant sporting up to 300 hp for certain markets. Incidentally, Subaru is also working on combustion tweaks and a more sophisticated catalyst that will allow its diesels to meet emissions regulations without using urea injection. The mood in-house is nothing if not ambitious. "We think we're on the right track," states a senior Subaru engineer. "In a few years, 30 percent of all Subarus will be diesel-powered." That's a hefty goal, especially since it remains to be seen if diesel cars will really catch on in America. For now, however, Subaru has made a commendable first step.' the article
3/18 Subaru electric car:  Two Subaru R1e three-door electric hatchbacks will begin testing in the U.S. this summer under the care of the New York Power Authority. The R1e uses "fast-charge" lithium ion battery technology that allows for quick charges that do not decrease battery life, Subaru says. Charging the two-seater to 80 percent capacity in 15 minutes gets our attention, but with a top speed of 65 mph and a range of 50 miles, the R1e is definitely just a city car. A full charge, when plugged into a standard electrical outlet, will take eight hours. The small Subaru's lithium ion batteries are designed in layers so they can be recyled at the end of 10 years of service. With a typical charge said to cost less than $2, the R1e can be powered at a fraction of the cost of a similar gas-powered vehicle. The press release.

3/12 Diesel WRX?  'A senior brand insider has revealed to Autocar that Subaru UK wants to sell a hot diesel-powered version of the Impreza WRX in the UK. Subaru’s new diesel boxer engine, currently only on offer in the Legacy, is likely to be offered in the Impreza in its current state of tune before the end of the year – and Subaru has already hinted that more powerful versions of the engine will follow....  the diesel engine will also spread throughout the Subaru range, including the new Forester later this year.'  read more
3/1 Hybrid: Mercedes planning a S 400 BlueHYBRID next year using lithium ion batteries. Lithium-ion are used in laptops and other gadgets and are smaller but more powerful than the nickel-metal hydride batteries used in current gas-electric hybrids like the Prius. Other automakers are working on lithium-ion batteries including Toyota, and GM is developing the Chevrolet Volt, an electric sedan to be recharged by plugging it into a household outlet.
1/22 Subaru's 2.0L boxer turbodiesel engine will be available in the Europe in February in a Legacy and Outback, and later in the later in the new 09 Forester. The cars are all wheel drive of course, and get a combined est 50mpg, with 150bhp and 258 lb/ft of torque (that's a lot). 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds. Road noise at 70.5 decibels, less than a Rolls Royce Phantom (72 decibels). Legacy prices start at £19,995, Outback at £21,495. No word on what or when any US models will be available (sorry).
1/10/2008 Wow, how times change! 'Americans bought more Toyota Prius hybrid gas-electric hatchbacks in 2007 than Ford Explorer sports utility vehicles, the top-selling SUV for more than a decade... Prius sales soared 69% in 2007, demand for the Explorer was less than a third of its 2000 peak  more

12/27/2007 Electric car: Green Car Congress is reporting that the all-electric R1e micro-car will be available in Japan in 2009, a year ahead of schedule. The R1 has an electric motor and a set of lithium-ion batteries. The car can only reach 62 mph,  maximum range of 50 miles, but can be recharged to 80% capacity in 8 minutes - making it an ideal commuter car for Japan’s densely-populated urban cities. more

5/19 EPA standards The White House is behind the EPA denying California and other states the right to regulate emissions.
'EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson initially supported giving a full or partial waiver to the State of California to limit tailpipe emissions, but changed his position after consulting with the White House, according to a deposition revealed yesterday.
EPA Associate Deputy Administrator Jason Burnett told the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee under oath that Johnson was "very interested in a full grant of the waiver" in August and September of 2007 and later supported a partial waiver. He said Johnson's position changed after communicating with the White House. His testimony is the most substantial proof uncovered by an investigation into the Bush Administration's influence over the decision-making of the EPA, which denied a waiver that would have allowed California and other states to set tougher tailpipe emissions standards..'  one of many articles
5/3 Tips to improve fuel economy
Tires. Properly inflated tires improves mileage. Subaru is generally 33-35psi, but check your tire sidewall or the manufacturer sticker on the door jam. Higher tire pressure, gives a slightly firmer ride and better economy.
Avoid quick, jackrabbit, green light starts. Zoom-zoom may be fun but it's bad for economy.
Avoid fast-slow, speed-up and slow-down freeway driving. Steady is better.
Cold engine. Don't push a cold engine, it won't accelerate as well, as quickly or smoothly, as a warm one.
Take out extra weight and junk from the trunk.
Use the recommended motor oil. Subaru is generally 5-30w.
Roof racks. Remove things from the rack that cause air drag.
Air conditioning, turn off when not needed. Note that A/C dries out the air and is needed to defrost the car and windshield, and most cars don't give you a choice but if they do, use the a/c for safety. Also the Mythbuster guys (on TV) did a test and found that a/c uses less gas than driving with windows down. And a/c should at least be used monthly to maintain the system.
Avoid excessive idling, but it's good to let any cold engine run for 15-20 seconds or so before putting it in gear.
Try not run out of gas and suck in debris and gunk from the bottom of the tank that clogs the fuel system. Also water and condensation can happen in an empty tank
Clean air filter. It's easy and makes a difference.

5/2 10 top gas guzzlers based on driving 15,000 miles per year, from Forbes. 'The gas-greedy SRT 8 (Jeep Grand Cherokee) is equipped with a 6.1-liter V8 engine, gets 11 miles to the gallon in the city and 14 on the highway. Owners can expect to shell out $4,186 a year at the pump. More popular Cherokee versions, like those equipped with a 5.7-liter HEMI engine, have an estimated annual fuel cost of $3,132, which is comparable to similarly equipped Ford Explorer, Mercury Mountaineer and Chevrolet Aspen SUVs.. The Lamborghini Murcielago and the Bugatti Veyron are the worst gas guzzlers among two-seaters, and across all vehicle classes. Drivers of both can expect to pay $5,025 a year in fuel costs. Both are estimated to get eight miles to the gallon in city driving but the Lamborghini gets 13 miles to the gallon on the highway and the Bugatti 14. The Bentley Azure, with an estimated annual fuel cost of $4,568, topped the compact car category; among midsize cars, the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, ($4,377 in annual fuel costs) won; and the midsize Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG station wagon topped its class with $3,438 in annual fuel costs.' read the article. 3/30/08 California changes emissions requirements that are used by many states. 'California air regulators on Thursday (3/27/08) slashed the number of battery-powered and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles that must be sold in the state, a setback for environmentalists and health advocates. The decision is expected to affect 12 other states that had adopted California's target for zero-emission vehicles (PZEV). The California Air Resources Board voted to lower by 70 percent the number of those vehicles that automakers must sell here and in the states that intended to follow California's get-tough rules for vehicle emissions.
Instead, the air board said the six largest automakers must sell nearly 60,000 hybrid vehicles while they develop the more advanced technology that will allow mass production of pure zero-emission vehicles. Board chairwoman Mary Nichols described the move as a major step toward putting cleaner cars on the road. The plug-in hybrids envisioned by the air board have yet to be designed, she said. "We're introducing a whole new category of vehicles to the public," Nichols said. "I don't think it's a step backwards in the real world." In essence, the air board took two steps on Thursday: It cut the number of zero-emission vehicles it wants on the road by 2014, while at the same time offering an alternative — the gas-electric hybrids.
Environmentalists and health advocates criticized the lowering of the zero-emission goal for vehicles. They said the threats posed by global warming, combined with rising gasoline prices, lends urgency to greatly reducing vehicle emissions.
"We are disappointed. We think this proposal doesn't take us on the road to meeting the state's long-term global warming goals," said Spencer Quong, a senior vehicles analyst at the Union of Concerned Scientist.
Auto manufacturers said they could not meet the California standard and needed more time to make affordable hydrogen and battery-powered cars.' from the AP
1/4/2008 California spec emissions lawsuit: 'Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire has followed up on a promise to join California's lawsuit against the EPA, lining up with more than a dozen states to defend tougher tailpipe emission rules. Washington is one of several states that have adopted California's vehicle pollution regulations, which would force car manufacturers to cut emissions by one-third in new vehicles by 2016, boosting efficiency to about 36.8 mpg. None of those states could put their laws into effect until California got permission for its law from the Environmental Protection Agency. But the EPA denied the program last month, rejecting California's arguments that it faced extraordinary threats from climate change... "It is our responsibility to challenge this ill-conceived decision by the Bush administration and move Washington towards a more sustainable future.'  more

12/18 advertising- Automotive Marketer of the Year  Subaru of America has been named Automotive Marketer of the Year by Mediapost.com marketing and advertising website.
'Recognizing Subaru's thoughtful and disciplined approach to its marketing in 2008, Mediapost.com singled out the "Love. It's what makes a Subaru a Subaru" work and the launch of the all-new Subaru Forester, along with the charity-based "Share the Love" campaign that is running currently, as ways the company has managed to maintain sales in a down market...
Karl Greenberg, editor at Mediapost.com said, "Subaru is an anomaly in the auto business for a couple of reasons. First, Subaru has the kind of brand equity and staunch loyalty you usually find in luxury marques, which means they can keep their message on product and brand, not deals. Also, they have turned a factor that could have limited sales to snow states - standard all-wheel drive - into a performance attribute that helps create a connection between all the vehicles...
In a difficult year for carmakers, Subaru is the only full-line brand whose year-to-date sales are ahead of the same time in 2007...' read more advertising news

10/27 Subaru: all wheel drive and a boxer engine = unused potential.  'There is no brand in Japan with as much unused potential as Subaru. It is kind of like Apple Inc was in the late 1990s before it came roaring back to prominence with the return of Steve Jobs.
You will not find a more talented and dedicated, if a bit anachronistic, group of automotive engineers.
The problem is they (Subaru) make unique products but have failed to build a brand that connects them to a wide range of customers. It is a textbook case of a company that still believes, "if we make good products people will buy them." That era ended with the last century...
So why can't Subaru implement strategies to make it what it could be — a more profitable small-scale car company.
In a word, it's the weight of Subaru's rigid corporate culture. As with many Japanese companies, Subaru has not made the moves needed to shift from the usual obsession with market share to creating value in products that increase profit margins.
It's not like attempts haven't been made. In 2002, the board approved the appointment of Kyoji Takenaka as president. The 52-year-old, with a considerable international track record and an understanding of the value of branding and design, was handpicked for promotion over 27 senior executives. He brought in outside talent that helped in the formulation of a design strategy. They came up with a design vocabulary that included Subaru's history as an aircraft manufacturer. This look debuted with the R2 Kei car.
The look was criticized from many corners, particularly dealers. Subaru caved in and went back to its flavor-of-the-month styling.
In the end, Takenaka alone was unable to implement what was needed for this consumer-market-oriented manufacturer with a limited range of products — to build the brand with a coherent global design strategy.

A modern car company needs a core of leaders with a shared overall vision to translate technical originality into corporate identity. Subaru has its roots in the prewar Nakajima Aircraft Company, or Fuji Heavy Industries, as it has been known since being formed in the forced corporate restructuring after the war.

It has produced one of Japan's automotive icons, the Subaru 360, and has consistently followed its own path. Over the years, Subaru has been partially owned by Nissan and General Motors, and recently Toyota acquired a 16.5 percent stake, giving it considerable influence on the company's direction.
What keeps Subaru different in a world of increasing technological standardization are its horizontally opposed "boxer" engines and across-the-board use of four-wheel-drive (4WD) and dynamic safety systems...
Its image has always been completely different in the United States, its other big market. It's an alternative choice product, something you pick to make a statement about yourself. In some college towns on either coast, you can throw a rock over either shoulder and hit a Subaru. But driving across the corn-belt states, you may never see one.
Often U.S. customers could buy more expensive imports but opt for the quirky Subaru. It got a lot of positive press for being one of the first car companies to aim advertising at the gay and lesbian community.
By now, Subaru should be a company whose unique technology and cultish customer base was milked for all it was worth and expanded into the general population...
There are reasons for hope. Takenaka's successor Ikuo Mori is making the right noises and has hired a new head of design from outside the company. What makes Subaru's inability to take the brand to the next level is not a matter of finances, just the inability to think differently. by Bob Sliwa
9/24 Love Works!  'As the auto industry sputters through its worst sales year since 1993, Subaru is clipping along, and it's doing so without an ad message touting price, performance or gas mileage. Despite offering the lowest incentives in the industry, the niche brand reported the industry's biggest percentage jump in U.S. new-vehicle sales -- 129,298 units through August, according to Automotive News, some 5.8% better than a year ago. What makes this feat even more impressive is the fact that most of the Subaru's loyal owners typically drive their vehicles up to 150,000 miles, meaning they aren't coming back to the market very often.
So where are the new sales coming from?  Referrals and word-of-mouth, said Tim Mahoney, senior VP-chief marketing officer at the automaker, who said Subaru owners love their vehicles and that leads to advocacy. Still, the company wasn't spreading the love far beyond that circle, which led the company to try its current advertising approach.
Carmichael Lynch did research last fall to learn why more people did not buy Subaru. He expected all-wheel-drive, which is offered standard on all Subarus, would be the main barrier to purchase, believing drivers in warm-weather states would figure they didn't need that system. But the research found a quarter of consumers simply didn't know much about the brand.
So Subaru started educating consumers with its umbrella ad theme, titled "Love," in the spring for the launch of the redone Forester SUV. Mr. Mahoney said emotions play a big role in the car-buying process and he criticized the many industry players that are hammering away at more rational reasons, such as price, fuel economy and performance in their communications.
He said consumers' favorable opinion of Subaru has jumped by roughly 25 points since last year.. Subaru also isn't gaining much additional volume from fleet sales, as only 5% to 6% of its total comes from rentals..
A lot of the credit can go to Subaru's 2009 Forester, which "has been a smash. They can't build enough of them," said Wes Brown, VP of consultancy Iceology. The model's bigger size and more SUV-like styling are bringing in more male buyers, he said. Mr. Mahoney said the prior Forester model attracted more females and empty-nesters, but now buyers are better balanced between the genders and are a bit younger. The model is also winning over buyers from Honda's Cr-V, Toyota's RAV4 and Ford Escape, he said..
The marque's U.S. market share was the highest ever in August, at 1.5%, even though Subaru had one of the lowest* average incentives in the industry last month, at $752 per vehicle, said Jesse Toprak of Edmunds.com. "That means your product is strong and selling itself." Mr. Toprak said Subaru sales are getting a boost from Americans who are downsizing from big SUVs to smaller, more fuel-efficient models.
Subaru buyers tend to be sensible and practical, said Mr. Mahoney, "that's the right place to be, especially now."  from adage
5/12 Love makes a Subaru? Advertising. Subaru owners appreciate the car for the practical things it does, on slick or dusty or back roads, or just hauling the family and dog around. Especially now with gas prices. Here's an advertising review  'Considering the Japanese automaker has changed taglines and agencies numerous times in the last decade, you might be wondering what "makes a Subaru a Subaru." Turns out it's a four-letter word: love....  The best of the bunch, we see two cars following each other on an empty road at dusk until they get to what looks like an automotive cemetery "Two days of driving. Larry following me all the way in the new one. We round a corner and there it is: Subaru Heaven. You don't let some wrecker haul your 300,000-mile Forester off to who knows where. You give that car a chance to live on, one part at a time." .. It turns out that Subaru owners do this in real life, and there's no doubt that the series humanizes the car..'   read more
5/8 Advertising change Subaru has combined all advertising with Carmichael Lynch, including internet and web, in addition to brand, retail, and media. Carmichael Lynch also does digital work with Harley-Davidson. "Within the automotive category, Subaru's customers are among the most Web savvy..  we're excited to weave digital strategy and execution into Subaru's overall brand campaign."  The account had been with R/GA, and both are part of the Interpublic Group. the article
4/25 new ad campaign Subaru marketed as an alternative to the mainstream?  A new ad "Love. It’s What Makes a Subaru a Subaru" is to be shown to dealers at their national meeting this week.  'SoA announced a new ad based on the strong emotional bond Subaru owners have with their vehicles. While most consumers have heard of Subaru and believe it to be a good product, 60% have no strong emotional opinion or attachment to the brand. Subaru owners are known for their outspoken passion and love for the brand...
The campaign squarely places the car and the consumer at the center of the advertising. John Colasanti, CEO of Carmichael Lynch (hired last October to replace DDB) said, “Subaru owners are ‘experience seekers’ - they want to live bigger, more engaged lives. They choose Subaru as a conscious alternative to the mainstream. To them, the car is the enabler of that bigger life.”
By focusing on the love they have for their car, Subaru is challenging non-owners: do you love your car?
“Love is the most powerful emotion and “I love my Subaru”is the most used phraseI hear about our brand,” says Tim Mahoney of SoA. “We wanted to show the bond between Subaru owners and their cars through this work.”  Mahoney and Carmichael Lynch worked together when Mahoney was at Porsche. Estimated ad budget $200m.

3/2 Advertising:  Subaru's Super Bowl ads introducing the then new 93 Impreza.  'At the time, the Subaru had been tortured for years by a little angel on one shoulder and a little devil on the other. Should Subaru be a “Big Car Company,” and continue to butt heads with Toyota, Honda and Nissan? The major players could easily undercut Subaru on the price of entry-level, front-drive cars. Or should Subaru stick to all-wheel drive, and be content to be a smaller, niche player? ... So Subaru decided to break out of its comfortable niche.. blew pretty much its entire annual ad budget for spots on the Super Bowl, to introduce the new Impreza.. Critics raked the Super Bowl ads over the coals, after which the brand was forced to “go dark,” having spent its ad budget. Much later, Subaru executives admitted to suffering from “Big Car Company-itis"..' more

12/2 November sales (updated 12/3)- 13,706 total, -8% from 14,868 in 11/07. First the good news-  for the year, SoA is still up almost 2,000 cars (+1%) over 2007 even with the recent down-turn! That's big news. The Impreza is +4% to 3,873, with the STI selling 732 in November thanks to the huge dealer incentive (up to $5000) combined with 0% interest.  The redesigned 09 Forester is a success and +64% to 4,996, up from 3,046 in 11/07. Now the bad news: Outback -45% to 2,686 units, Legacy -15% to 1,529, Tribeca -56% to 622 from 1,417 in November 2007.  Subaru hopes to sell 18,000 cars in December so they'll need strong incentives.
