and Forester News
1/5/13 recall Optional puddle lights (small outside lights under each door that illuminate the ground) may short circuit when exposed to saltwater, which could lead to overheating and possible fire. Models involved have the optional puddle lights and are the 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outback, 2009-2012 Foresters sold before January 2012, and 2006-2012 Tribecas sold before January 2012. Reportedly around 54000 car in the US could be involved. According to online reports, the problem has been known for years with various fixes failing to solve it. The latest repair will be new wiring with a fuse. Recall #WQE-41
3/13/12 recall- The rear center seatbelt on Foresters built between November 26, 2007 and March 13, 2012 might not work correctly with some child safety seats (CRSs) that require a short belt routing configuration. The center seatbelt has an Automatic Locking Retractor that may not lock when such a configuration is used. It's necessary to replace the rear seat center seatbelt assembly. Recall code #WQA-37. Call Subaru 800-782-2783, or NHTSA at 888-327-4236 about campaign #12V099000.

Update crash test new roof strength rating system
and 09 Forester does well!'The
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is launching a new roof strength
rating system to help consumers pick vehicles that will help protect them
in rollover crashes. Twelve small SUVs are the first to be put to the test.
Only 4 earn the top rating of good. The Volkswagen Tiguan has the strongest
rated roof, and the Kia Sportage has the weakest among the 2008-09 models
evaluated.

PZEV
a brief simple summary |
(a
brief, simple summary)
The EPA says PZEV is the cleanest running gas car on today's market based on emissions testing for carbon-containing compounds, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, and other tailpipe nastiness. It is required in CA, CT, NJ, NY, MA, ME, RI, VT, PA, OR, and WA What is does 1. A charcoal cannister catches unburned gas left in the engine when it's turned off so it doesn't just evaporate. 2. Fuel injectors close tighter when they're not in use. 3. It has a finer mesh in the catalytic converter, as well as optimized placement of precious metal. 4. The engine's electronic brain is set to run hotter at start up so the catalytic converter starts working faster. |

'Three inches separate the herd in length (about the length of an index finger, not very much).. lowest (horsepower): the CR-V's and RAV4's 166, highest: the Nissan's and Subaru's 170hp... the all-new 2009 Subaru Forester, mind you-walks off in first place in this survey because it apes almost everything the others do right and sidesteps nearly all their pratfalls. It rides like a La-Z-Boy (credit the new double A-arm rear suspension's 0.8-inch-longer travel), though it can slightly meander at times. It steers with a sweet buildup of rim forces. And unlike everything else here, affords this rare thing called "great outward vision. Exorcized of cramped rear legroom and graceless styling, the Subie's charm becomes hard to resist." October 2008: The 09 Forester
is MotorTrend's SUV of the year!
'.. So how does a small,
quirky, former airplane manufacturer from the Gunma prefecture of Japan
finish first among surprise offerings from established players and bold
moves by newcomers? How does it beat a chest-thumping, head-turning macho
mobile known as the BMW X6? How, when Ford wraps stylish sheetmetal around
a Gulfstream V interior and calls it Flex? How can it win, when Kia serves
notice to the entire category with its own body-on-frame, V-8-powered Borrego,
and Infiniti conjures up seven-speed transmissions and jaw-dropping bird's-eye-view
monitoring systems?
Just how does the Subaru
Forester do it?
Let's start with the humble
powertrain. At the track, that four-speed, 224-horsepower Forester 2.5XT
zips to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds and to the quarter mile in just 15.5. Not
as impressive as the 6.6 and 15.1-second runs a similarly equipped Forester
2.5XT managed in our previous comparison ("Turbo Chargers," September 2008),
but still as fast or faster than all but the BMW X6, Lexus LX 570, Toyota
Sequioa, and Infiniti FX and EX. It's not just fast, but fuel friendly,
too.
The naturally aspirated
Forester is no slouch, either.
More feats of engineering
competence were revealed when we broke out the tape measure. While classmates
like the VW Tiguan manage only 56.1/23.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind
the front/rear seats, the Forester yields a whopping 63.0/30.8. Similar
spatial advantages are seen in the commodious driver and passenger compartments;
in our other small-CUV comparison test ("The Frugal Five," June 2008),
the Forester provided the most front/rear headroom and front legroom in
a field that included the Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Saturn Vue, and Toyota
RAV4.
Still not impressed? Then
factor in the one metric that puts the S in SUV: ground clearance. With
an undercarriage 8.9 inches (8.7 for Forester 2.5X) above ground, the Forester
2.5XT not only beats every one of the CUVs in the two aforementioned comparisons,
it equals or betters fellow SUV of the Year contenders Honda Pilot (8.0),
Kia Borrego (8.5), and Lexus LX 570 (8.9). Consider those mere soft-roaders?
Both Foresters beat or equal the Land Rover LR2 (8.3), Toyota FJ Cruiser
4x2 (8.7), and Ford Expedition 4x4 (8.7). Inside and out, off-road and
on, this little Subaru is truly an impressive feat of packaging.
With a starting price of
$20,660, our Subaru is the most affordable AWD SUV in this group
Of course, it isn't perfect.
No SUV is, not even the one that wins Sport/Utility of the Year. For starters,
if you're interested in moving more than five people or 2400 pounds of
towable gear, the Forester must be chopped from your list.
Some judges also dinged
the Subaru for its "parts-bin interior" and lack of style. Others pegged
this simplicity as back-to-basics goodness... a thoughtfully designed,
well-executed vehicle. At a time when our nation is paying the piper for
poor investments and past excesses, the Forester brings to mind many of
the humble values that made this country great: thrift, resourcefulness,
doing more with less.
St. Antoine sums it up best,
"It takes only a few miles to begin to appreciate the Forester's many virtues.
It does everything most SUV buyers need-with more off-road capability than
they'll likely use-yet remains friendly and carlike in its character. In
many ways, the Forester represents the new SUV paradigm; it's the right
vehicle for the times...' the

1st place: 2009 Subaru
Forester XT Limited: Quick, roomy, fuel-efficient, and well-priced, the
Forester checks just about every box-most important, the one for first
place.
2nd place: 2008 Mazda
CX-7 Grand Touring AWD: Striking lines, sublime steering, and athletic
chassis make this the driver's choice. Subpar fuel economy and hefty curb
weight make it our second choice.
3rd place: 2009 Volkswagen
Tiguan SEL 4Motion: Cute, refined, and feature-laden, the Tiguan is a winner.
Were it five grand less, it might've been this test's winner.
' ... we gatheredthe
all-new 2009 Vee-Dub, along with two of its turbo-four rivals-the equally
new 2009 Subaru Forester XT and the formidable 2008 Mazda CX-7-equipped
them in topline trim and with all-wheel drive, and took them on a 500-mile
trip to Lone Pine, California, home of Mt. Whitney, the tallest peak in
the Lower 48. Along the way, we evaluated the threesome over our hilly
40-mile test loop in Tehachapi as well as the rugged, dirt roads in Fossil
Falls State Park in Little Lake. Naturally, we concluded the review with
our usual battery of instrumented track testing. Which of these go-anywhere
turbochargers performs best under pressure? Let's get spooled up.
The Tiguan, in $33,630
SEL 4Motion guise, proves the priciest of the group, but does come loaded...
The Deutschland-built Tiguan, not surprisingly, offers a very Teutonic
ride: firm enough for responsive moves yet supple enough for everyday liveability.
Mazda CX-7 With regard
to styling, the Mazda doesn't split the others; it shames them. From its
slanted nose and ultra-raked windshield to its flared fenders and kicked-up
beltline, the CX-7 is distinctive and edgy, downright racy for a crossover.
"The best-looking of the group.. Mazda, which treats enthusiasts to acutely
accurate and deftly weighted steering; stout brakes, which put up the best
60-to-0 stopping distance (119 feet); and a collected chassis that feels
the most at ease near the limit. "Has 'driver's car' written all over it,"
