2010 Forester news
and updates
1/5/13 recall Optional puddle lights (small outside lights under each door that
illuminate the ground) may short circuit when exposed to saltwater,
which could lead to overheating and possible fire. Models involved have
the optional puddle lights and are the 2010 and 2011 Legacy and Outback,
2009-2012 Foresters sold before January 2012, and 2006-2012 Tribecas
sold before January 2012. Reportedly around 54000 car in the US could be involved. According to online reports, the
problem has been known for years with various fixes failing to solve
it. The latest repair will be new wiring with a fuse. Recall #WQE-41
3/13/12 recall- The rear center seatbelt on Foresters built between November 26, 2007 and March 13, 2012 might not work correctly with some child safety seats (CRSs) that require a short belt routing configuration. The center seatbelt has an Automatic Locking Retractor that may not lock when such a configuration is used. It's necessary to replace the rear seat center seatbelt assembly. Recall code #WQA-37. Call Subaru 800-782-2783, or NHTSA at 888-327-4236 about campaign #12V099000.
new 10/31/10 optional side window rain deflectors. They look good and work well. For 2009 and newer Foresters. Dealer installed only, not available factory or port installed. See your local parts dealer.
9/1/10 2011 Forester
CVT rumors keep popping up. Many of us had hoped for a 2011 Forester
CVT but it seems the 11s will have the same 4 speed auto and 5 speed manual
choices. Well, at least at first. Maybe.
Subaru teased us a while
ago, announcing that the 2011 Forester will have an updated 2.5L DOHC with
a timing chain and requiring 0w-20 synthetic oil. No reason was given and
no transmission or other mechanical upgrades or changes was announced,
and as a result there has been much talk and speculation as to the reason
for a make-over of the tried and trusty 2.5L.
It was announced at the
same time that the 2011 Forester is expected to get a minor 1mpg better
economy over the 10 with the same transmissions (thats not the 10% the
article below mentions), and the engine will require the new 0w-20
synthetic oil.
So, rumors keep popping
up- is a CVT is coming on the 2011 model? Maybe, maybe not. Will
it be a mid-2011 model year change, or will the 2011 be a short run replaced
by an early 2012?
All is still rumor, speculation,
as the article below says, "details remain murky". But where there's enough
smoke there's fire, and yes Subaru holds their cards close to the chest...
"According to a Nikkei report
sourced by Automotive News, Subaru will soon unveil an updated version
of its four-cylinder boxer engine, which may reduce fuel consumption by
as much as 10 percent. The redesign would mark the first major change in
the Subaru's horizontally opposed engine in nearly two decades. While details
remain murky, the report suggests the engine will displace between 2.0
and 2.5 liters and will be paired to a continuously variable transmission
to maximize efficiency. The engine is expected to make its first appearance
in the Forester compact SUV by the end of 2010, and will be followed by
applications in the Legacy and Impreza...." the
article
July 2010- Subaru's new 5W-30 synthetic oil is recommended on turbos (not required on 2010 Forester)

is rated at 1 mpg better fuel economy, up to 21/27 for both the manual
5 spd and automatic 4 spd.
New for 2011, the 2.5L requires

This section is for the major model upgrades and not the option packages and individual options below. This is a new way for Subaru to equip vehicles. For example, the All Weather Pkg was standard on the 2009 premium, and now it's an option on 2010s. No doubt this to help sales in warm areas where the option is not needed but it means the buyer will have to check features carefully on any car. Some of the features and packages here are standard equipment on certain models. subject to change, correction, updating |

Update crash test new roof strength rating system
and 09 Forester does well!'
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is launching a new roof strength
rating system to help consumers pick vehicles that will help protect them
in rollover crashes. Twelve small SUVs are the first to be put to the test.
Only 4 earn the top rating of good. The Volkswagen Tiguan has the strongest
rated roof, and the Kia Sportage has the weakest among the 2008-09 models
evaluated.
The Tiguan, Subaru Forester,
Honda Element, and Jeep Patriot earn good ratings. The Suzuki Grand
Vitara, Chevrolet Equinox, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, and Mitsubishi Outlander
are rated acceptable. Roofs on the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape are marginal,
and the Kia's is poor.

PZEV
a brief simple summary |
(a
brief, simple summary)
The EPA says PZEV is the cleanest running gas car on today's market based on emissions testing for carbon-containing compounds, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, and other tailpipe nastiness. What it does 1. A charcoal cannister catches unburned gas left in the engine when it's turned off so it doesn't just evaporate. 2. Fuel injectors close tighter when they're not in use. 3. It has a finer mesh in the catalytic converter, as well as optimized placement of precious metal. 4. The engine's electronic brain is set to run hotter at start up so the catalytic converter heats up and works faster. |

Towing | Towing a
trailer
with trailer brakes: 2,400 pounds without trailer brakes or when pulling up long grades in hot weather: 1,000 pounds Use common sense and don't overload the car. Do not tow with a new car for the first 1000 miles. A transmission cooler is always a good idea if towing a lot (not available from the factory). The factory hitch is 1.25" Towing the car- a
flatbed is always recommended when towing your Subaru.

2010 Forester XT comparison - how the XT stacks up to CRV, RAV4, Tiguan,
Mariner, Outlander, Forester, Grand Vitara, Terrain from CarandDriver.com
February 2010 issue
Forester
XT- 4th place. Overall, this is a gratifying blend of agility, practicality,
and performance. It’s interesting to note that before we calculated observed
fuel economy, the Forester was in third place. Turbos can be thirsty. Airy
cockpit, superb sightlines, light, agile, quick.
Lows:
Not the world’s most rigid platform, needs a fifth gear. The Verdict: A
Subaru that’s finally gone mainstream.
Results- 1st place Toyota Rav4, 2nd VW Tiguan, 3rd Honda CRV, 4th Subaru Forester XT, 5th Mitsubishi Outlander, 6th GMC Terrain, 7th SSuzuki Grand Vitara, 8th Mercury Mariner. Read the article from the February 2010 issue of carandriver.com
1/15/10- Motor Trend 2010
comparison
Forester comes in last
place when Motor Trend compares the 2010 Forester to the GMC Terrain, Honda
CR-V and Hyundai Tucson.
The 2009 Forester was all
new and top of the heap in power and fuel economy and was Motor Trend's
2009 Sport Utility of the Year. That was then.
In this new comparison of
2010 models, the 2010 Forester continued to do well and was slightly faster
than the 09 and had better braking for example, but it just didn't
shine like it did 2 years ago when it was brand new..
The results: #1
CRV, #2 Tuscon, #3 GMC Terrain, #4 Forester. read the article Motor
Trend
2009 Motor Trend comparison
5/25/08 Motortrend.com
compares the 2009 Forester
to the Nissan Rogue, Honda
CRV, Saturn VUE Green Line, Toyota RAV4. 'Three inches separate the herd
in length (about the length of an index finger, not very much)..
lowest (horsepower): the CR-V's and RAV4's 166, highest: the Nissan's and
Subaru's 170hp... the all-new 2009 Subaru Forester, mind you-walks
off in first place in this survey because it apes almost everything the
others do right and sidesteps nearly all their pratfalls. It rides like
a La-Z-Boy (credit the new double A-arm rear suspension's 0.8-inch-longer
travel), though it can slightly meander at times. It steers with a sweet
buildup of rim forces. And unlike everything else here, affords this rare
thing called "great outward vision. Exorcized of cramped rear legroom and
graceless styling, the Subie's charm becomes hard to resist." June 08 issue
