updates and basic history
Made by Fuji (Subaru) in Ota, Japan.
Introduced in 1993, the Impreza has consistently
been top rated. It is about the size of a Corolla or Civic. Over the years
is has been available in 2, 4 and 5 door models, with all wheel drive or
front wheel drive. Engines offered were a 1.8L, 2.2L, and 2.0L and 2.5L
after 2002
1/27/09 New accessory Chrome Sport Grill with a JDM look for all 2008/09 Imprezas available- dark gray frame around black mesh with chrome horizontal bar
11/19/08 Update: iPod interface recharge function doesn't work with new Nano 4th generation and iPod Touch 2nd generation. Other functions still work but they don't recharge. Subaru is working on a new version of the interface.
4/11/08 STI Coil Springs available for the 2008 Impreza 4 and 5 door models. The new pink STI Coil Springs are specifically tuned for street performance and are approximately 25 percent stiffer than the stock springs. Vehicle ride height is also reduced by about 10mm. The lower center of gravity and reduced body roll results in noticeably improved handling. While the STI Springs have been developed specifically for the 2008 WRX models, the springs also have application to all 2008 Impreza 4 and 5 door models, excluding the STI. The STI Coil Springs are covered under the 3-Year, 36,000 mile Genuine Subaru Accessory Parts Warranty, and may be installed by the dealer.
10/21/07 Crash test, 08 Impreza gets Good in the frontal offset crash test from IIHS. 'Dummy movement was well controlled. After the dummy moved forward into the airbag, it rebounded into the seat without its head coming close to any stiff structure that could cause injury. Injury measures — Measures taken from the dummy indicate a low risk of any significant injuries in a crash of this severity..' more
September 6, 2007 Roof rack (roof carrier base), standard on the Outback Sport and optional on other models, is intended to be used 'on demand' as removed when not in use. This is due to wind noise.

Impreza 2.5i sedan speed test results,
CarandDriver, April, 2007
2007 model, not 2008
'Impreza 2.5i: Tenth Place, Quickest Cars
of 2007 Under $20,000 from caranddriver. 'There’s good noise, and there’s
bad noise. Since 2001, we’ve loved the endearing growl of Subaru’s boxer
engines, and it is fair to say that, of the 10 cars on this list, only
a variety of Honda Civics have supplied us with as much fun as have Subaru
Imprezas. The shift linkage is quick and positive, the controls are all
where they should be....' more

My thoughts on the 2008 5 door
(note: we own an 02 Impreza Outback Sport,
automatic)
1. I think the front passenger seat is
way too low, the passenger sits too low. It's uncomfortable, the
door sill is too high for my elbow to rest on, I 'plop' into the seat.
2. The angle of the rear hatch makes the
cargo area too small, it's functionally smaller than our 2002 Impreza.
Can't load as much, dogs won't like it. The gate should be more upright
for increased room, we need room for all the stuff we carry and why else
would get a wagon otherwise?!
3. The ride is a bit softer (but not soft)
which is nice through some folks may differ. Its just prefereance,
4. Sportshift is good! The automatic shifting
is smoother than previous years. I'd definitely use the manual mode and
shift a higher RPMs for more zip, though that doesn't help fuel economy
at all. The previous automatic is not quick or responsive.
5. The airbags are good to have, and so
are the heated seats and front wipers on the Outbacks.
We're sticking with the 02 though the redesign
has many really good pluses.
