about the Subaru Legacy.....

• Introduced in 1990 the Legacy has been Subaru's best seller.

Powered by a very dependable 2.2L engine and since 1996 an optional 2.5L engine, the Legacy has come in a variety of models, including front wheel drive, Subaru's well known all-wheel-drive, turbo powered models, luxury models, rugged road (Outback) models, and sport models.
• 1995 1st re-design. Outback model introduced.
• 1996 2.5L engine offered on seelct models
• 1999 30th Anniversary models
• 2000 the Legacy extensively re-designed. The 3rd generation Legacy is longer, wider and more powerful, with improved safety components, side air bags on some models, limited slip rear axles, completely new rear suspension, new dashboard, power seat and a lot more. 2.5L engine now standard on all models.
• 2001 The Brighton model discontinued, so the least expensive model is the L. The L and GT models remain very much the same. The big Legacy news for 2001 is the Outback Limited H-6 models. This 6 cylinder engine is only available in 2 Outback versions.
• 2002: No major changes. All models get delay-off dome light, 2 cupholders in center console. All wagons get smaller center rear headrest for improved visibility. All sedans get emergency trunk release.  GT models get the All Weather package, illuminated ignition switch, woodgrain door trim. Colors: new Silver Stone Metallic replaces White Birch, Reggata Red Pearl replaces Winestone. $30 price increase (GT more due to all weather pkg ), $30 delivery increase.
• 2003: Major changes. GT Limited name dropped but the wagon and sedan only available in what would have been a Limited with side airbags, leather, all weather pkg etc. New Sportshift automatic transmission for the GT. New model L Special Edition Package (L SEP)

NEW FOR 2003 models a lot has changed for 03 the basic L is upgraded with a Special Edition Package. You get a lot for the money. The GT wagon is upgraded to what would have been a Limited in 2002 although it isn't called that anymore.  GT automatics get the new SPORTSHIFT clutchless transmission with VDT all wheel drive.  And as always, colors come and go... new for 03 GT new Major changes for the GT and L models.  new The base GT wagon is gone, so there is now only one GT wagon and sedan. Both are what last year would have been called 'Limited" models but this year there is no such name. new GT wagon now comes with all the features on the 02 Limited sedan, including upgrades stereo, leather, side airbags, heated seats and etc. The sedan remains the same with the folllowing changes applicable to the wagon: new Transmission. This year all automatic tranmission GTs get  SPORTSHIFT. New for Subaru clutch-less shift feature for more controlled and sportier driving. Select'D' (drive) and the automatic shifts normally, or move the gear selector to the left and control the gears by tapping the lever up or down. Sportshift gear clearly indicated in upper center of gauges VTD AWD (variable torque distribution) with 45/55 front/rear power split for a sense of stronger acceleration. The VTD system has been used in the H-6 models since 2001. new Projector beam fog lights replace last year's style new Design alloy wheels (last years style is on the L SEP) new Keyless entry 'chirp' sound replaces honk new Momo designed leather steering wheel new 8 way power seat (replaces 6 way) new Stereo: in-dash 6 disc CD changer standard (replaces single disc) with am/fm/weatherband. Keyless entry 
Locks and unlocks 1 or all doors from 20-30 feet away.
Flashes parking lights.
Dual safety unlock: one push of the unlock button does the driver's door only, 2nd push unlocks all doors incl. gate on wagon.
Door ajar: when locking if a door isn't closed chirps 5 times.
Panic mode: holding lock button starts panic mode (honks horn).
Battery: replaceable
Alarm Upgrade: Flashing red light on dashboard. Impact and break-in sensors trigger alarm with ignition disable. Valet mode warning light when alarm is disabled.
