11/10/09 Crash test-2010
Legacy is the first car with all 4 bumper damage estimates under $1,000
and 'leapfrogs the competition for bumper protection', from
IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety)
The highest rating IIHS
has ever issued for a bumper test and the 2010 Legacy is one of only 5
cars to ever get this rating.
'The Legacy's bumpers are
a big improvement over those on its 2007-09 predecessor. The new Legacy
earns an acceptable rating in a recent series of tests to assess and compare
how well bumpers resist damage in everyday fender-benders. In contrast,
the previous Legacy is rated poor. Fifteen of 17 midsize cars evaluated
by the Institute are rated marginal or poor for bumper protection.
The Legacy's performance
shows what automakers can do when they pay attention to damage prevention
in the low-speed crashes that happen every day," says Institute senior
vice president Joe Nolan.
The Legacy is only the fifth
car the Institute has tested to earn an acceptable rating for its bumpers.
The others are the Ford Focus, Mazda 6, Scion xB, and Smart Fortwo. No
car has yet earned a good rating. The Legacy is the first car the Institute
has tested to limit damage to the bumper system in all 4 tests, and it's
the first car with all 4 damage estimates under $1,000.
The Institute rates bumpers
good, acceptable, marginal, or poor based on performance in 4 tests — front
and rear full-width impacts at 6 mph and front and rear corner impacts
at 3 mph. Each vehicle is run into a steel barrier that mimics the design
of a car bumper, with the barrier's plastic absorber and flexible cover
simulating typical cars' energy absorbers and plastic bumper covers. These
tests are designed to drive bumper improvements that lead to better damage
resistance in real-world crashes.
The biggest improvement
for the Legacy was in the front full-width test. The ‘07 model sustained
more than $4,000 damage (based on ‘09 parts and labor costs) when the bumper
underrode the barrier. In contrast, the 2010 model sustained less than
$900 in the same test.
"Subaru made some simple
changes to the Legacy's front bumper," Nolan explains, "and they paid off
in significantly lower repair costs." Compared with the new model, the
2007 Legacy sustained nearly 5 times as much damage in this one 6 mph impact.
The main difference is that the 2010 Legacy's front reinforcement bar is
a little taller, more than 6 inches wider, and more than 1½ inches
higher off the ground. This kept the Legacy's bumper engaged with the barrier
during the test, preventing it from sliding under the barrier. Plus the
bumper bar extends to the corners to help protect headlights and fenders.
"The Legacy leapfrogs the
competition for bumper protection," Nolan says. "These common sense bumper
changes will help keep repair costs down in low-speed crashes." from
IIHS
11/9/09 Idle minds note that there are 208 possible Legacy combinations so finding a specific model and color might be hard. The breakdown- 26 Legacy model and Option Package combinations with 8 colors each = 208 possible combinations. this doesn't even include PZEV emissions or any of the other options and upgrades.
10/17/09 PZEV clarification- PZEV is required in CA, WA, CT, MA, ME, NJ, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT on Legacy with CVT transmission, models 2.5i (AAB), 2.5i Premium (AAD), and Limited (AAF). It is not required on manual transmission models 2.5i (AAA) or Premium (AAC). I am not sure why it's like this.
9/29/09 Fog lights now list $314 (was $300)
8/27 Top Safety Pick- 2010 Subaru Legacy and Subaru Outback are the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's newest Top Safety Pick award winners. "To qualify for Top Safety Pick, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of good in the Institute's front, side, and rear tests and be equipped with electronic stability control. Criteria to win are tough because the award is intended to drive continued safety improvements such as top crash test ratings and the rapid addition of electronic stability control, which is standard on the Legacy and Outback." 7/18/09 2010 Legacy brochure corrections- If you have an early 2010 Legacy brochure some of the GT's interior details may be wrong. Brief overview
The all new 2010 midsize
Legacy sedan is longer, wider. taller, faster, and has new more fuel
efficient 6 speed manual or CVT automatic transmissions.
All 2010 Legacy and Outback
5th generation models are all new and completely redesigned.
New body, new interiors,
new tranmissions, new engines, pretty much new everything...
The 2010 Legacy Model
Line- the overall Legacy sedan line remains similar to previous
years, with 4 cylinder, turbo and 6 cylinder models.
4 cylinder- there are 3
models, a base 2.5i, mid-range Premium (replaces SE), and top of the line
Limited.
4 cylinder turbo GT models.
The GT specB performance model is dropped! All 10 GTs will have
a 6 speed manual transmission, with no automatic available in the GT. There
are 2 models- Premium and Limited. Turbo unit moved to lower front center
(see image above)
6 cylinder. New 3.6R models
have the larger 3.6L engine used in the Tribeca. The R is the code for
a 6cyl DOHC engine. It has good power and runs on regular gas and is very
a welcome upgrade! There are 3 3.6R models- the base 3.6R, a new mid-range
3.6R Premium model, and top of the line 3.6R Limited.
Other brief 2010
Legacy highlights.
The cars are a bit larger
and have a nice more open and spacious feel inside. Interior space has
increased but the overall length and size has not gone up dramatically.
There's a lot more back seat room (that's a good thing), the front seats
are a bit wider and perhaps even softer (thank you) etc. All carefully
done to maximize the available space in a mid-size car but not lose the
quality, comfort and driving traits that have made the Legacy a great choice
since 1990.
Frames doors- all models
have framed doors. If you're familiar with the Legacy/Outback line from
1990-2009, you know the windows were always 'frameless', now all
models will have frames. This adds rigidity and hopefully will reduce that
ever-present wind noise from the outside mirror area that Subarus have
been prone to.
Huh? For some reason the
outside mirrors don't fold-away but perhaps that will change.
Option Packages. A new way
of doing things. It's almost impossible to have the exact right car for
every buyer. There are just too many possible combinations, some features
sell here, others sell there- popularity can be based on region and driving
conditions, like warm vs cold climate, wet vs dry, city vs country, lots
of snow vs no snow.
Starting with the 10 models,
Subaru is offering models with 'Option Package' upgrades. The 'Option Packages'
are all described below. What this means for the
buyer are more choices.
For example, on previous
mid-range SE models, the All Weather Package has been standard. Like it
or not, you got heated seats etc. Starting with 2010, it's an option. While
I personally would want it, not everyone does- some want to save money,
others live in warm climates where All Weather Pkgs and heated seats are
silly.
Tall people don't like sunroofs
(less headroom), other people really like them. The Sunroof is now
an option on the mid-range Premium where it was not available at all before,
and is an option on the Limited model where is previously was standard.
Patience. please understand
that with all the choices now offered, dealers may not carry in-stock the
particular combination you want and will have to order it for you. Be patient.
Hill Holder and Electronic
Parking Brake (with auto release): standard features on all models include
a Hill Holder to help hold the car when starting on a hill, and an electronic
parking brake system which eliminates a manual brake (no foot or hand brake).
Laser cut keys.
There is finally a key lock
cylinder to open the trunk. The lock is out of sight under the lip, but
it there and easy to use.
18.5 gallon tank replaces
the 16.9 gallon tank.
New transmissions
- All 2.5L 4 cylinder models (not turbo) come with either a new 6 speed
manual which replaces the 5 speed manual, or a new automatic Lineartronic
CVT (continuously variable transmission) with paddle shifters and 6 'gears'.
The CVT gets mush better fuel economy (23/31mpg) than the old 4speed automatic
it replaces that has been used for years (and years)..
What is a CVT transmission?
CVT is a gearless belt or chain drive transmission. It efficiently matches
RPMs and power requirements for better fuel economy because the engine
runs at its most efficient RPM over a range of speeds. Subaru named this
new transmission Lineartronic CVT. It has a 'manual mode' with paddle shifters
and 6 selected 'gears' for drivers who wants more control and feel. Subaru's
1989 Justy EVCT was the first production car in the U.S with a CVT (continuously
variable transmission), and Fuji has sold their technology to other companies,
and still use it in small cars in Japan. Other companies using a version
of a CVT recently are the Toyota hybrids under the name Hybrid Synergy
Drive (ie Prius, Highlander, Camry, Lexus etc), Honda Civic hybrid, Nissan
Murano, BMW's Mini Cooper, Mitsubishi Lancer, Dodge Caliber, Jeep Compass
and Patriot, Ford Freestyle, Five Hundred and Mercury Montego etc etc.

CVT transmission - what is it | New for 2010
model, the Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission is the only
automatic transmission available in 4 cylinder models. It replaces the
automatic Sportshift.
What is a Lineartronic
CVT transmission? CVT is Continuously Variable Transmission. Lineartronic
is just Subaru's name for their CVT. CVT is a gearless chain drive
transmission that efficiently matches RPMs and power for better fuel
economy because the engine runs at its most efficient RPM over a range
of speeds.

Hill Holder button
and dash 'on' light
|
This redesigned
for 2010 Hill Holder system is now electronic and standard on all models.
It uses the electric parking brake.
After the car is started, the system can be turned on by stepping on the brake and then pushing the Hill Holder button by the driver's left knee (next to the parking brake button). A green dash light indicates the system is on. When stopping on a hill 5% or steeper, either going up or down the hill, the Hill Holder activates the parking brake to briefly hold the car from rolling as the driver moves their foot from the brake to the gas pedal. |

Brakes
To use in as emergency brake tap or hold the brake button down but only in an serious emergency when you cannot normally brake! This will cause your rear wheels to lock so be very careful. The brake makes a mild groaning sound as it activates and releases so you know its working. The mechanical release for the electric brake if the battery is dead is under the car in front of the right rear wheel. It's an awkward process, so keep the battery charged. Towing | Towing a
trailer- with a Legacy is not recommended. If you do tow keep the weight
down around 1000lbs. Have a properly equipped trailer with brakes, Replace
the CVT oil around 24855 miles if towing a lot.
Towing the car- a flatbed is always recommended when towing your Legacy. A manual transmission can be towed with all wheels on the ground behind a tow truck or motorhome for example, but never with just 2 wheels on the ground. An automatic or CVT can be towed with all 4 wheels on the ground in an emergency for a short distance (under 31 miles) and at very slow speed (under 20mph) but a flatbed is strongly preferred. |
