5/27/11- Subaru has conflicting statements about Recommending vs Requiring synthetic or regular oil.
> Synthetic is required on all 2011 turbo and 2.5L Foresters
> 2011 Outback, Legacy, Tribeca, Impreza, (exc turbos)- Some owners manuals will recommend using synthetic but not require it. Owners manuals printed around March 2011 presumably indicate all Subarus require synthetic oil.
All 2011 models use 5w-30 except the Forester X which uses 0w-20

BREAK-IN PERIOD-  for the first 1000 miles
Don't race the engine, keep RPMs under 4,000 for the most part and vary the speeds with normal mix of city and highway driving. Don't use the cruise control or go at one steady speed for a long time. Avoid hard starts and stops.

Note: the warranty maintenance owner's booklet may have incorrectly omitted the recommended 105,000 mile 2.5L timing belt replacement.

OIL CHANGES
Oil- Use 5W-30. 

2.5L and 3.6R models: Regular oil is ok, synthetic oil is recommended. 
Subaru does have some conflicting information about regular vs synthetic oil. Synthetic is recommended.
Its required to replace the oil and filter at least every 7,500 miles or 7.5 months. 
With stop and go, or hard driving, towing etc its recommended to replace every 3750 miles or 3.75 months

2.5 GT turbo- synthetic oil is required. 
Turbo maintenance
> Early warranty books: the Subaru maintenance schedule note #1  reads "When the vehicle is used under severe driving conditions, the engine oil and filter should be changed every 3,750 miles or 3 3/4 months. All turbo-charges vehicles are considered to be operated under severe driving conditions"
> Later warranty books: the statement no longer includes  All turbo-charges vehicles are considered to be operated under severe driving conditions.
Suggested: do the first oil change by 3mos or 3000 miles and then at least a minimum of every 7500 miles or 7.5 months afterwards. That is as long as you should go and it is strongly recommended to replace it much more frequently.

2.5L 4 cylinder 5w-30  oil 
1st oil change required at 7500 miles or 7.5 months, recommended at 3750 or 3.34 months. 
2nd and Subsequent oil changes: required at least every 7500 miles or 7.5 months.

3.6L 6 cylinder  5w-30 oil
1st oil change required at  3,750 miles or 3. 3/4 months 
2nd and Subsequent oil changes: required at least every 7500 miles or 7.5 months.

2.5L GT turbo Synthetic 5w-30 oil only.
1st oil change required every 3,740 miles or 3.75 months,  see turbo statement above

Other Maintenance
15,000 miles: check hoses, belts, brakes etc. Replace air filtration.
30,000, 60,000, 90,000 miles: 15k service plus replace fluids, filters
Spark plug replacement interval   on all 2011 Outback, Legacy, Forester, turbo, and 6cylinder, the spark plug replacement interval is 60,000 miles. 
Note- early maintenance books printed Sept, 2010 incorrectly have 52,500 miles, 52.5 months, or 84000k have for the spark plug change but its really 60mo/60,000 miles..

CVT Transmission: Life Time Oil, no replacement needed unless driven under severe or frequent towing conditions, then change every 24,855 miles. There's no CVT dipstick. 
Radiator fluid is Super Coolant, with over 10 year replacement schedule.
Timing belt- replace at 105,000 miles. The warranty maintenance owner's booklet may have incorrectly omitted this.
Timing chain on the 3.6L 6 cylinder, no inspection or replacement needed

What is a Lineartronic CVT transmission? CVT is Continuously Variable Transmission. Lineartronic is Subaru's name for their CVT.  CVT is a gearless chain drive transmission that efficiently matches RPMs and power  for better fuel economy because the engine runs at its most efficient RPM over a range of speeds. 
The Subaru CVT uses a chain and  has  'manual mode' with paddle shifters and 6 selected 'gears' for drivers who want more control or better performance and just like to play.
> Maintenance: only use Subaru CVT C-30 oil. The oil does not need to be changed unless driven under very hard or frequent towing in which case replace at 25000 miles. There is no dipstick.

VDC is standard on all models
VDC vehicle dynamics control, is an electronic stability control system that measures and monitors steering wheel input, braking, vehicle angle etc and then applies individual brakes and/or reduces engine power to counteract skids or slides to help keep maintain driver control.
TCS Traction Control System is part of VDC. TCS senses spinning wheels and applies the brakes to maintain traction.

3.6R, automatic 5 speed transmission with Sportshift
VTD All Wheel Drive system  (Variable Torque Distribution)  with VDC and Hill Holder  VTD traction control system has 45/55 performance oriented, front/rear power split with Limited Slip rear axle.

1. A charcoal cannister catches unburned gas left in the engine when it's turned off so it doesn't just evaporate. 
2. Fuel injectors that close tighter when they're not in use.
3. A finer mesh in the catalytic converter, as well as optimized placement of its precious metal.
4.  The engine's electronic brain is tuned to run the hot at start up to help the catalytic converter heat up so it can start doing its job faster.

The CVT automatic tranmission city mpg range is 19-27 which is avg 23mpg; the highway mpg range is 25-37, avg 31mpg.
