2012 Legacy News and updates
this webpage is updated often with new details and info.

3/30 final day for 2012 factory orders for all Outback, Legacy, Forester, and Tribeca models. Manual transmission and 3.6L models had already stopped on 3/6.
Dealers will continue to receive 2012s but in diminishing numbers. Low production models will sell out quickly. Subaru announced 2013 Outback and Legacy details yesterday.

3/29 2013 Outback and Legacy details announced. They will debut at the big NY Auto Show April 4-16 alongside the all new XV Crosstrek. New Outback and Legacy models usually arrive in late spring/early summer, the Crosstrek is expected later this summer.
The 2.5L engine and CVT are new, the suspension has been improved on all models among other changes.
Dropped models:  The Legacy GT, Legacy 2.5i Premium with manual transmission, and both Legacy and Outback 3.6R Premium models have been discontinued. If you want one now is the time!

2013 Legacy
The 2.5L engine and CVT are new, the suspension has been improved among other changes.
Models- 2.5i manual or CVT, 2.5 Premium CVT, 2.5i Limited CVT, 3.6R and 3.6R Limited with the 5 speed automatic
Gone: the Legacy GT, 2.5i Premium with manual transmission, and 3.6R Premium models have been dropped.
All models get a new grill, headlights, bumper, fog lights, and brake override system so when brake and gas are pressed at the same time, the brake overrides the gas and stops the car.
Suspension: body sway or lean has been decreased up to 40%, plus other steering and suspension enhancements for a smoother, quieter ride with better handling.
There will be other minor upgrades.
The 3.6L engine and 5 speed automatic remain the same.
The 2.5L engine is new, its the FB25 that was first used in the 2011 Forester.
The new 2.5 engine has a timing chain (replaces timing belt), and gets better fuel economy plus has more power.
It has 173hp up from 170hp and 174ft-lb torque up from 170.
2.5L economy increases to 24/32 combined 27, up from 23/31 combined 26 for the 2012-2010 models
The CVT is the 2nd generation and is expected to be quieter and more responsive.
New features and options
New keyless access with pushbutton start is available, no word on which models.
Cloth material (2.5i, 2.5i Premium and 3.6R models) has been upgraded, and
The silver dash trim will be replaced by a dark glossy woodgrain trim (no word if this new trim is also on the Limiteds).
2.5i: now has steering wheel audio controls with hands free bluetooth, audio streaming, and USB (like 2012 Premium/Limited)
2.5i Premium: now with standard CVT (no manual available) and has standard 17" alloys (replaces 16")
2.5i Limited and 3.6R Limited  upgrades for 2013 include rear A/C vent, upgraded electro-luminescent dash display with 3.5" info display. There is no memory seat.
New- Eyesight system will be available on both Legacy and Outback. No details yet on which models it will be available.  Eyesight is a new, multi-functional, forward viewing dual camera system that warns you if the car is wandering out of the lane (lane departure warning) or it detects an object in front the car in which case it helps stop the car by activating the brakes or increasing brake pressure, and uses engine management to reduce RPMs and lower the speed. It has Adaptive Cruise Control that helps maintain a set distance from the car in front.
And it lets you know if, when stopped at a traffic light, the car in front has started moving.

3/26 The 2013 Outback and Legacy to be at the NY Auto Show April 6-12 (4th-5th are press days). 
The cars will be be mildly refreshed and are expected in late June.
Among other changes, Subaru Eyesight will be officially introduced at the NY auto show.
Its an advanced driver assistance system with multiple functions that will be available on some 2013 Outback and Legacy models.  The Eyesight system
 uses 2 small, forward facing cameras on either side of the rear view mirror to create an image of the road immediately ahead of the car.

3/6/2012 Outback and Legacy- orders are no longer accepted for 2012 Outback and Legacy 3.6R models and Legacy 2.5i manual transmission models - the 2.5i, Premium and 2.5GT - as Subaru prepares for the end of the model year. There will be a good selection of these models for a while but if you want a 3.6L Outback, or 3.6L or manual Legacy, its time to look seriously.

11/27/11  master cylinder issue on 2012 Legacy, Outback, and Impreza.
Last week Subaru announced a delay shipping Outbacks, Legacys and Imprezas. On the 25th, they confirmed rumors that its due to a brake master cylinder issue, and dealers cannot sell or deliver affected vehicles until they are repaired.  That means cars expected to arrive in November or early December may be pushed back.  This does not involve Forester, WRX/STI or Tribeca. This is safety recall campaign code WVY-35. Subaru is acting quickly- parts are already being shipped and arriving at dealers, and letters will be sent to owners. In an emergency, the Impreza still has a manual parking/emergency brake, the Legacy/Outback's electric parking brake will function as an emergency brake if gently tapped but be careful.
'SoA received a limited number of reports of intermittent excessive brake pedal travel in 2012 Impreza models built through November 15 as well as 2012 Legacy and Outback models built between October 27 and November 23. While braking capability in these vehicles is maintained, drivers have reported their concerns about greater than normal brake pedal travel"

WHATS NEW FOR 2012

The 2012 Legacy continues to have the same model line-up with no major mechanical or feature changes from 2011/2010.
It was rumored they might get the new DOHC 2.5L 4 cylinder used in the 2011 Forester but it didn't happen.
The cars are expected to start arriving mid-late September 2011. Usually new models are available late June but due to the March 2011 earthquake in Japan, the date has been pushed back. Subaru also announced finance rates on Sept 1st for for the 12s. Rates start at 2.9%, oac for the NW/Settle area. That means there aren't that many 2011 remaining.

2.5L  no price change. 2.5 Premium +$300. 2.5 Limited +$300. 3.6R +$100. 3.6R Premium +$300. 3.6R Limited +$300. GT Limited turbo +$200

New Features
> 2.5i base models- new optional  'Alloy Wheel Package' which includes the All Weather Package (AWP), 17" alloy wheels, and fog lights for $995 after package discount. This should be a very popular option package. This is the first time the AWP has been available on the base Legacy.
> Premium- 2.5 and 3.6R Premium models get Bluetooth handsfree cell phone with steering wheel controls,  Bluetooth wireless audio streaming, USB, 6 speakers.
> Limited- 2.5 and 3.6R Limited models get fog lights and an upgraded Harman/Kardon (h/k) audio package with a new 4.3" LCD color display, HD radio, and XM satellite. The h/k has an AM/FM with single CD, replaces the AM/FM with CD changer. The XM is now free for 4 instead of 3 months.
> GT Limited- no changes for Subaru's high performance turbo sedan

New Steering wheel now with black audio and cruise control switches with white text better visibility (replaces silver buttons with black text)
New Power lumbar support button on the power driver's seat no longer has an image.

Maybe next year - things it would be really nice to have

#1- Memory drivers seat. How long do we have to wait for this? At least on top end Limiteds
GT upgrades- make the car look and handle like the engine deserves. Upgrade the suspension, brakes, wheels and tires to handle the power, and add some beef to the body so it looks like the successful performance car it wants to be and could be. A sleeper shouldn't be sleepy. And badge and number them like the old specBs.
Rain sensing auto-on windshield wipers. Its a Subaru and mostly sold in wet climates...
Handsfree bluetooth and USB on all models- its a safety issue. New for 2012, its standard on all except base model.
Bumper corners made more dent resistant. Its not just Subaru, most current bumper corners dent too easily.
Power outside mirrors that automatically move down when the car is in reverse so you can see the curb
All Weather Package should include trunk tray, rubber floor mats, splash guards
Lumbar and height adjustment on the front passenger seat
Splash guards big enough to be effective.
Fewer models, only one interior color! .

. 2012 MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE subject to change and correction see your local servicing dealer for full details and coverage on your specific car -

Break-in period  for the first 1000 miles Don't race the engine, keep RPMs under 4,000 for the most part and vary the speeds with normal city/highway driving. 2.5L models- the first oil change is required at 7500 miles or 7.5 months. Its recommended to do it around  3months/3,000 miles.  3.6R  models- the first oil change is required at 3months/3,000 miles.  Service schedule Oil- Use 5W-30. 2.5L and 3.6R models: synthetic oil is recommended but regular oil is ok.  Subaru does have some conflicting information about regular vs synthetic oil. Synthetic is recommended. Its required to replace the oil and filter at least every 7,500 miles or 7.5 months. With stop and go, or hard driving, towing etc its recommended to replace every 3750 miles or 3.75 months 2.5 GT turbo synthetic oil is required.  > Turbos: Subaru owner's manual maintenance schedule note #1 reads "When the vehicle is used under severe driving conditions, the engine oil and filter should be changed every 3,750 miles or 3 3/4 months. All turbo-charges vehicles are considered to be operated under severe driving conditions" That means replace at least every 3,750 miles or 3 3/4 months using synthetic though there is confusion and some dealers are saying to replace it every 7500 miles/7.5 months. First service- 2.5L models- the first oil change is required at 7500 miles or 7.5 months. Its recommended to do it around  3months/3,000 miles.  First service- 3.6R  models- the first oil change is required at 3months/3,000 miles.  First service- 2.5GT turbo models- the first oil change is required at 3.75 months/3,750 miles (see above) continuing service intervals  7,500 miles/7.5 months- oil/filter service, rotate tires. equal tread is required on all tires. 15,000 miles/yearly- repeat 7500 mile service, replace cabin air filter, check hoses, belts, brakes etc 30,000 miles/30 months- 15k service plus replace air filter and brake fluid. inspect other all fluids, filters,  60,000 miles/60 months (5 years)- repeat 30k service plus spark plugs. 3.6L models use transmission fluid. 2.5L CVT does not.  90,000 miles/90 months- repeat 30k service plus replace all fluids, filters 105,000- replace timing belt on 2.5L models. The 3.6R Timing chain does not need replacement Radiator fluid is Super Coolant long life. The first replacement is 11 years. 2.5L CVT Transmission: Life Time oil and should not need to be replaced unless driven under hard conditions, towing etc-change every 24,855 miles. Note- there is no CVT oil dipstick. --

The ‘HD’ in ‘HD Radio’ is part of iBiquity Digital’s brand name for its digital AM and FM radio technology.
It does not mean either hybrid digital or high definition, it is simply the branding language for this new technology.
HD Radio broadcasting is free, there are no subscription fees.
You can get digital AM and FM stations, including HD2 and HD3 multicast channels.
HD Radio broadcasting is your favorite local AM and FM stations broadcasting digitally, producing radically improved sound.
Very clear. AM radio sounds like FM, and FM radio sounds like a CD.
Unwanted pops, hisses and dropouts are a thing of the past with an HD Radio receiver."
HD2 multicasting means more FM channels and new programming available from local FM stations, which you can only hear on your new HD Radio receiver.
Across the country, local FM stations are offering a wide variety of new formats on their HD2 channels: reggae, blues, classic jazz, future country, new alternative, deep tracks, bluegrass and local artists.
The service includes iTunes Tagging. iTunes Tagging lets you capture information about a song on the radio and store it on your iPod by pushing the "Tag" button on the HD Radio receiver. When your iPod is connected to iTunes, a list of tagged songs will appear which can be previewed, purchased, and downloaded.

CVT transmission - what is it	The Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission is the only automatic transmission available in 4 cylinder models. It replaces the automatic Sportshift. It was new for 2010 models. What is a Lineartronic CVT transmission? CVT is Continuously Variable Transmission. Lineartronic is Subaru's name for their CVT.  CVT is a gearless chain drive transmission that efficiently matches RPMs and power  for better fuel economy because the engine runs at its most efficient RPM over a range of speeds.  The Subaru CVT uses a chain and  has  'manual mode' with paddle shifters and 6 selected 'gears' for drivers who want more control or better performance and just like to play. > Maintenance: There is no dipstick to check the oil level Only use Subaru CVT C-30 transmision oil.  Should not be changed unless driven hard or frequently towing in which case replace at 25000 miles.  > Background Subaru's 1989 Justy EVCT was the first production car in the U.S with a CVT, and Fuji has sold their technology to other companies, and they still use it in small cars in Japan. Emissions:  4 cylinder models are available in either Fed or PZEV (partial zero emission vehicle)  spec. PZEV required on all 4 cylinder Legacys with the CVT only, sold in CA, CT, NJ, NY, MA, ME, RI, VT, PA, OR, WA ie the Legacy 2.5i and 2.5i Premium with manual transmission are not PZEV.	What is PZEV, a brief, simple summary The EPA says a PZEV is clean running gas engine car based on emissions testing for carbon-containing compounds, oxides of nitrogen, particulate matter, and other tailpipe nastiness.   It is required on 4 cylinder Legacys with the CVT (not on manuals) sold in CA, CT, NJ, NY, MA, ME, RI, VT, PA, OR, WA 1. A charcoal cannister catches unburned gas left in the engine when it's turned off so it doesn't just evaporate.  2. Fuel injectors that close tighter when they're not in use. 3. A finer mesh in the catalytic converter, as well as optimized placement of its precious metal. 4.  The engine's electronic brain is tuned to run the hot at start up to help the catalytic converter heat up so it can start doing its job faster. Parking Brake with Auto Release with Hill Holder	An Electric Parking Brake is standard on all models (there is no manual parking brake). It is to the left of the driver's knee. Push on, Pull off  (with foot on brake) It is very convenient with auto release and Hill Assist function to prevent rollbacks. Hill Holder button and dash 'on' light	The Hill Holder system is now electronic and standard on all models.  It uses the electric parking brake to hold the vehicle from rolling down hill.  After the car is started, the system can be turned on pressing the Hill Holder button by the driver's left knee (next to the parking brake button).  A green dash light  indicates the system is on. When stopping on a hill 5% or steeper, either going up or down the hill,  the Hill Holder activates the parking brake to briefly hold the car from rolling as the driver moves their foot from the brake to the gas pedal.

Towing	Towing a trailer- with a Legacy is not recommended. If you do tow keep the weight down around 1000lbs. Have a properly equipped trailer with brakes, Replace the CVT oil around 24855 miles if towing a lot. Towing the car- a flatbed is always recommended when towing your Legacy. A manual transmission can be towed with all wheels on the ground behind a tow truck or motorhome for example, but never with just 2 wheels on the ground. An automatic or CVT can be towed with all 4 wheels on the ground in an emergency for a short distance (under 31 miles) and at very slow speed (under 20mph) but a flatbed is strongly preferred.
